15 round magazines were uses in WWII, with the invention of the M2, 30 round magazines were adopted for both. Note MAGAZINES. Clips were 10 round and required the use of a stripper clip guide to load the MAGAZINE.
They made 30 mags for the M2 full auto version of the M1. They were interchangeable. They had a curve to them like most mags now.
They were also called Banana mags ( because of the shape ).
There was a special clip made that allowed 2 to be put side by side. When one mag was empty , you ejected it & turned the whole thing over & put the 2nd mag in for a total of 60 rounds.
"...There are also short 5 round mags..." Those are usually cut down 15 round mags. Made for hunting Stateside. There are a lot of States that have a hunting rifle mag capacity law. Some States don't allow the .30 carbine for deer hunting either.
