I hope someone here can clarify this for me.
I was given an M1 Carbine from a friend who's uncle passed away.
I have gone to the CFC website and am more confused now than ever.

Are the M1 Carbines restricted I have been told yes and no, if so can they be converted to unrestricted??

Thanks in advance for any help.

JJ

the m1 carbine USGI IS restricted as the barrel is 18" IF the barrel is longer then 18.5 its NOT restricted measure your barrel close your bolt on an EMPTY gun put a rod down the barrel mark the rod and measure it

NOW if someone has welded on an extension to the barrel its still restricted as thats no longer legal

the only way to make it non restricted is to install a new barrel thats over 18.5' long most are 19-20'

So if I buy a 19" barrel and install then I can register it as a non-restricted??

Thanks, I may just do that.

JJ

its restricted STILL if he romoves the barrel and has NOT installed a longer barrel

if its a USGI carbine PLEASE do NOT replace the barrel its bubbaing a gun the CFC will not allow you to put the origional barrel back on

so you end up destroying a orig ww2 rifle.........

if its a plainfield or universal go nuts

"...So if I buy a 19" barrel..." Unfortunately, that's easier said than done. 19" carbine barrels are few and far between. Iver Johnson made 19" barrels in the late 70's/early 80's, but not many.
If you do find one, don't even think about installing it yourself. It takes a barrel vise, a proper action wrench and headspace guages.
The mags must be pinned to 5 rounds too.

Is it possible to register a restricted firearm? I thouight only unregistered non-restricteds could be registered?

No worries....it's a Universal still in the box, don't think it was ever fired???

NOT worth fixing up a universal if it has dual action springs its not worth fireing they were poorly built

USGI and planefied carbine were fine most universals esp the dual spring ones were garbage
