I've had a chance to try out an M1 carbine a while back and it had the rear sight milled off and a v notch sight installed over the chamber area. I have heard these were redone by the Germans during the war but don't know for sure. The guy that owns it wants to put a red dot sight on it but I don't know if there is a mount made for this model........Anybody familiar with this?

Sounds like a Bavarian Border Patrol model. These were M1's sold to them after the war, wherein they removed the standard sights, and put on their own. Usually, if I'm not mistaken, these were stamped on the charging handle as well, but I know some weren't as I have one lacking any additional markings.

As for a red dot... my personal feelings on that is that it will only detract from the value of the gun.

There is a no gunsmithing mount available for M1 carbines. It slides in the rear sight dovetail (after you remove the rear sight of course). Sadly, if yours has been ground off, you are SOL.

your sol most of the german carbines had the rear dovetail ground off

IF your lucku it was just filled in some had a piece of metal inserted

use irons or get rid of the rifle!

No I don't think the Germans ground off the dovetails, they put a piece of metal in there flush with the top and then machined the top to an anti glare finish. At least that is how it is on mine. I bet you could install a USGI rear sight or that mount by knocking out the filler piece in the dovetail.

"...by the Germans during the war..." Shortly after the war for the West German Police. Not just the Bavarians. Supposedly because that type of sight was what they were used to using on their K98's.
