I jumped on a deal for this M1 Carbine (restricted) that I found on the EE. It has some minor issues which require attention. The stock needs to be stripped, the barrel has a shroud on the end, which has already been removed. The front site has be ground flat and repaired by gluing wood to the top, well I've already removed the site and will order a new one.

Now for some confusion the stock, slide and trigger group have matching numbers 36**. But there is not a serial number to be found on the receiver. The barrel is 18" I believe is the original and stamped Saginaw - General Motors.

I believe this rifle is likely a Bavarian carbine.

My question is what to do about the serial number since this is a restricted rifle?

Will update this thread as my parts come in and I get it cleaned up.

Yeah, I think the rear gouge is where the serial was. The metal looks as though it was removed many years ago based on the patina. I'm wondering how this could even be registered. But tomorrow I'll be calling the CFC and see what I should do.

You have a restricted firearm with a defaced serial number. It is a criminal offence to remove a serial number. Do you suppose that it might have been stolen? I wouldn't touch that carbine with someone else's ten foot pole. And I sure wouldn't post a thread like this.

Tradex is selling 19" barrels.

The rifle arrived on my doorstep an hour before i had to leave for work this afternoon. I wanted to reasearch the rifle as much as possible which why i took the photos.I bought the rifle expecting issues and figure at the price I could at least re-coup it as a parts kit.

I dont believe the rifle to be stolen, the seller has several hundred interactions on the EE.

I plan to call the CFC for 9am tomorrow and find out where I go from here.

First of all. With the restricted barrel a transfer must have taken place for you to receive it along with the paper work. Since you had no way of seeing it before it arrived it is not your problem. Contact the CFP and ask for a resolution, after all they approved the transfer. If you want to spend the money for a non-restricted barrel and no registration go that route and deregister it. If you wanted a restricted version you now have to deal with it. The CFP as far as I know no longer issues the little stickers but they should be able to offer you a alternative.

The transfer notice came in today, the serial number on the paper is only 36**. Doesn't add any clarity.

Then I wouldn't stress too much over it, that is the # they are using as the "identifier". If the paperwork is completed as such then I wouldn't even consider calling the people at Miramichi....enjoy your "project" as they have already done the "due diligence" at some prior exchange. No need to rock the boat & give some clown an excuse to "justify his job" opportunity.

The #'s listed will be a partial rendition (last four digits) of the original, (probably) seven digit ser #. There should be a date/flying bomb stamp on the barrel along with the manufacturer identifier. With a barrel date & since the frame and barrel are both "Saginaw", I think that a close guess can be made as to the actual man. date within a "block" of serial #'s.

Well I called the CFC, bit of a gong show. The first person I talked too was helpful yet confused, thinking the rifle was non restricted (despite me telling him it was restricted). And didn't seem to care that the serial number was removed. He was even more confused to how It was registered without a serial number. So he transfered me to a Firearms tech in Ottawa. The Tech seemed to think the serial number being removed wasn't a big deal, because he too though the rifle was non restricted. After he realized it was restricted he put me on hold for 10 or so minutes and came back with the suggestion, to call the CFC back and change the registration (to the rifle having no serial number) and second he recommended calling the Police and reporting the serial was defaced. So the police in the city which the rifle came from could/may investigate.

I called the police and said they would send an officer over, that was at 10:30, been waiting nearly 8 hours and no one yet.

OP, I hope you never got to attached to that rifle as I think its going for a car ride in the trunk of a police car. Hopefully I am wrong and the cops breeze in, take a quick looky see, and then roll on out but something tells me that is not in the cards with those folks.

Out of curiosity, did you know the serial number was defaced when purchasing? If not, I would have tried to return it. Why should this become YOUR problem?
