I have recently seen a different M1 Carbine.

the rear sight is a little strange. it's not a peep sight, but a pistol-type of rear sight, which is also adjustable. the sight is sitting on just above the chamber, rather than the usual location at the end of the receiver. however, there is a raising post at the end of the receiver, where the usual peep sight goes, but since there is not groove on the post, no sight can be installed. the surface of the post is flat.

Barrel has the following marking:

General Motors
12-43

Receiver has the following marking:

Inland Div

matching #'s on the receiver, stock, charging handle and bolt.

Any idea what's the story with this?

Aye.

Some of the Ch-ermans liked more "mauser-ish" sights and there are many variations each department did. I have seen some Carbines in which they shaved the rear sight arms right down flush, some hatched to avoid sun glare some not, even others with just a flat plug put in at the rear sight to even it out. The consistent thing is that they usually soldered a mauser like rear sight right on top of the receiver just fore of the bolt over top where it says "US CARBINE 30 M1"

Check out this useful site to determine if we're on the right track

German M1 Carbines

Well, with this guy and in this country, its in the eye of the beholder. I have seen them go for as little as some Universals, just because to many people, they look bubba-ed.

Although I collect M1's, I don't really have an urge to own one of the German rear-sight ones. If I *had* to have one though :p I wouldn't want to pay any more than $300 for it, and even then, it better have all USGI parts, a nice barrel, original stamped USGI stock and a German police marking on it somewhere to lend it credence as more than a bubba.

If you like the look of the little carbine, grab it. You won't regret it. The carbines issued to the Germans generally were very well looked after.

Yes indeed, if you like it, get it. You will at least be getting a USGI carbine thats gone through a different phase of its life.

And you know what they say, opinions are like #######s, everyone's got one! :D Mine is my own, and so if it appeals to you and the price makes you feel good....its your baby.

So like Freddo says, if you like 'er, grab 'er.
