Hi I just bought what i think is a M1 Carbine. It fires 30 carbine shells and has the cutout in the butstock for a sling. I can't find any writing on it other than a # with postal meter stamped under it. Does anyone know anything about my gun? Thanks.

It sounds like an m1 carbine alright, National Postal Meter was a company that made these rifles for the yanks.

There is spome place that lets your determine the year of manufacture based on the serial number, ask around at www.gunboards.com for more info.

Pics are always helpful in these instances, but it sounds like you have a National Postal Meter M1 carbine. It should also be marked "U.S. Carbine, Cal. 30 M1" on the top of the receiver, at the breech. Check the barrel, just below the step in the diameter, behind the rear sight. There may be a manufacturer name and date there. Carefully examining all the parts will turn up manufacturing codes on all the parts with an area big enough to stamp - lol. There is a lot of info on the 'net on the M1 carbine, so just fire up your favourite search engine.

Thanks guys. There are quite a few numbers stamped into the gun at different locations. I got the gun, which is in really good shape, for 140 bucks. Good deal or bad deal?
