I want a light playing around load for the garand. So I loaded 45 grains of H4895 and 147 grain pulled m80 bullets. Just wanting a second opinion. Good place to start for a light plinker? I am going to work up a bit from here if it doesn't group well. But am I too low for this rifle? Hodgedon manual lists 43.5 for 150s in a 30-06 with this powder.
What's the opinion?

Thanks!

Reason I started at 45 grains is because most of the googling I came up with says to start at 47. But that's almost the max load. I am assuming this is because of the gas system. Not sure.

My notes say 51gr as a max load for a 150gr.

I think I'm loading 46 or 47gr (would need to check) with Campro 147gr right now with good results. I ran load development and even the starting loads had no issue cycling the action. I just went with what shot the smallest groups.

Awesome, I should be good then. I just wanted some plinkers for basic shooting. The bullets are horrible for accuracy anyway. So if they fire and cycle the action then i am happy. Thanks!

That will work.

Try loading 5 at 40, 41, 42, etc. and find out, for your log book notes, what it takes to cycle the action. In the future you would want to be at least 2 gr more than that.

My M305 (308) will cycle down to 25 gr!

That would be really handy to know. I like to make my plinkers as economical as possible.
