M1 Garand 7.62 ported gas plug needed for HP .308?

Not sure if this has been answered, but does an Italian M1 Garand in 7.62 need a ported gas plug to shoot commercial hollow/soft-point .308? I understand this is the case for the .30-06 models shooting high pressure HP rounds so I am wondering if this is the case for M1s converted to 7.62 NATO.

i did some chronographing out of my 308 garand and factory 150gr federal Soft points were chronoing around 2800-2900FPS which to me is way too much for a garand and likely putting too much pressure on the OP rod.
 
If you plan to use commercial, non-Milspec ammo in a 7.62x51/.308 OR .30-06 Garand an adjustable gas plug should be used. There are several versions of these available. I use one made and sold by Pocketfisherman, who is a CGN member. It works well.

i PM'd him a few days ago asking how much for one. i dont think hes on much anymore. im thinking about picking one up and tuning it just for the norinco surplus 308.
 
Member Beretta Armorer will be getting a couple in next week to sell. Might want to inquire with him also. I to am waiting for a reply from Pocketfisherman. He told me he had a couple...told him I would take one and haven't heard from him since. Hope all is well with him.

That Norc surplus stuff is just standard 147gr 7.62 ball. I've used it in my Beretta M1 without any issues using a standard gas plug.

The ported gas plugs are needed for hunting ammunition where the rounds are much hotter and high pressure such as the Super-X Soft Points or Hornady HPs.
