I got my Garand back from the gunsmith on Tuesday.

On Wednesday I bought an angle gauge as a preliminary check with cleaning rods had something looking... off about it.

The timing on the barrel, compared to the receiver, seems to be off, by a bit less than a degree, or so.

Is this a serious problem, or within accepted limits of tolerance for barrel installation?

I believe proper alignment is 20 minutes of angle off top dead centre. so 1/3 of a degree shy of level between the barrel and receiver.

Dis the Zhinese high school shop class index that one? Ha ha ha ha just kidding because we Norc owners understand.

That's a simple fix with the right tools. Or you can always send it to me. It will take me longer to take out my tools and prep the barrel and receiver with masking tape than the actual indexing job.

Those of you who have seen me do this at my clinics know what a simple job this operation can be. :)

Cheers, Barney.

Allright. If that's too far out of index then I have a guy who I can send it to. He's got a barrel vice and can do a make-shift set-up for a one-time job.

TacticalTeacher, I appreciate the offer and if I had no one in the area I'd likely take you up on it. But I trust this guy to do a good job. I'd have sent it to him in the first place, but it needed other work that he didn't have the equipment to do.
