M1 Garand Combination Maintenance Tool

Hungry suggested that I purchase one of these things. No one can explain how to use it (Not even the milsup form)!

Apparently these are the uses for the tool:

1 - Remove and replace the gas cylinder lock screw and various other screws; and seat the rear sight base;
2 - Extract a cartridge case;
3 - Remove pins and assemble the extractor and ejector;
4 - Assemble and disassemble the extractor and ejector without removing the bolt from the rifle;
5 - Clean the chamber of the barrel;
6 - Install the extractor spring and plunger.

Can anyone explain how to use the tool to accomplish items 2, 3, 4, and 6?

I don't think that the tool you have is the one for disassembling the bolt in the rifle. You want the M-10 tool Here is a detailed explanation of how it works from The Firing Line.

the brush on this tool makes an excellent broken case extractor for the m14.
Also due to the hinge in the tool, it can be rotated at 90 degrees for using as a chamber brush.

i'm sure Hungry can enlighten us on further use of this tool on the m14 .... once his owie is better

Pretty nifty alright. But your #### won’t fall off if you don’t have the M10 or M14 disassembly tool, if push comes to shove all you need is a 30-06 case, a rag and a flat head screw driver to do this in about the same time.

No, it must be a spent 30-06 case. The idea is to have the spent case slide into the chamber only about ⅔ of the way then stop so you can use it to compress the ejector and spring back into the bolt for either removal or replacement of the extractor. A 270 case slides all the way into a 308 chamber.

It can also be used to take apart and reassemble trigger groups .
The little pin punch on the fork loooking part works great for this.
I actually use my M1 tool in lieu of the M14 combo tool , it has more uses for me .

I wish I had seen this before I purchased Brownell's $80 bolt disassembly jig!

Also, 270Win casing works fine, essentially the same shoulder length as the 3006.

Now where to find an M-10 tool?

You are right! Weird, I tried a 270 case last night and it slid too far into the chamber to get at the plunger and spring then I tried another again and what do ya know it does work just as good as a 30-06.

Did you use a resized casing? The case I tried had not been resized.

No, but I had a few 303 & 308 casings mixed in a batch of 270 casings, I think I grabbed a 303 casing by mistake, because the 303 mimics about what I saw last night ( the case goes all most all the way in the chamber).
