Hey guys.

Just curious if there is a conventional method of taking the cylinder/piston apart? I have a bunch of corrosive ammunition and my dad suggested I'm able to clean the cylinder/piston as well? I don't have the proper tool to do so, I just want some suggestions?

Thanks

The op rod is also the piston. Once you remove the oprod from the action, you can clean the cylinder assembly by removing it from the barrel. Undo the plug at the front and remove the lock. You can now slide the cylinder off the barrel.

Here's a link to how to strip the M1 Garand: http://www.surplusrifle.com/garand/rifledisassembly/pdf/m1garanddisassembly.pdf

Have fun. Congratulations, you got one the greatest WWII battle rifles.

A large flat head screwdriver is all I use to remove the gas cylinder plug. Everything else can be stripped without tools. Make sure and clean properly for corrosive ammo as soon as you get home, garand and it's parts are too valuable these days to ruin over cheap ammo.:)
