Hi every one,

I bought an M1 garand for my father a few weeks ago because he always loved them, but I didn't know at the time that they need softer shooting ammo.

He knows this now, and hasn't shot it yet but is kind of bummed that we can't just go to the store, grab some shells and go blasting.
So, I looked into it and learned a bit about vented gas plugs that let you shoot regular power ammo with out bending your op rod.
I found this:

http://www.brownells.com/rifle-part...tem-kits/adjustable-gas-system-prod20456.aspx

Will this do the trick for shooting regular 30-06? Just put it in, open it up and adjust it until the gun cycles properly?
I want to make sure because I would hate to see my old man damage his rifle and I want him to be able to enjoy it.

Thanks a bunch guys!

yes it will allow you to shoot commercial ammo, I did get mine from brownells, however it was not that exact manufacture, mine is made by McCann Industries, see if its still on their website it works just fine for me.

Or you can just buy ammo that is suitable for the rifle. It is available, and I believe there is even a commercial line that is specifically made for the M1.

Long before there was an Internet, millions of rounds of 150ish (and better) grain factory ammo was fired out of M1 Rifles with no fuss. Haven't ever seem nor heard of anybody damaging their rifle with the ammo alone in 40+ years.
Never seen any non-internet source(like a rifle manufacturer or the U.S. Ordnance Dept.) proof of ammo damaging rifles either. Nor do you see any 'CYA' warnings from the ammo manufacturers. Said manufacturers would be getting sued regularly Stateside if there was a rifle damaged by ammo alone.
However, if you're worried use Federal American Eagle brand ammo if you can find any.

I have one of those for my 308 granad which I use for hunting. Much more comfortable shooting factory loads. It does take a few rounds to adjust it though....for me I will just buy the same ammo and continue to use that for hunting so that I don't ever have to readjust.

i don't doubt that, but also, long before the Internet, we didn't have powders pushing new higher velocities, creating new higher pressures on 70 year old items that have been worked hard.

i wasn't willing to risk my garand, and I'm sure a lot more aren't as well.

reloading is best, followed by adjustable gas plug.

A M1 in .30-06 is a friggin' delight to shoot. Been using 168 grain match bullets mostly, but 165's and even the few 220's I shot out of it, lets you shoot all day with no trouble. IMR4064 is your friend. Far more consistent accuracy than either 4895.
