Who has used their M1 Garand's for hunting? Any pics? Stories? I'm off this weekend to hunt a Umingmak(muskox) with my Springfield M1 Garand ... wish me luck! :D Pics and story to follow.

Good luck!

I only recently obtained my first M1 ... haven't had a chance to even fire it yet :( But it is going to be with me on a hunt eventually.

I used an M1 Garand to hunt when I lived in the Yukon 12 years ago (was the only rifle I had at the time). Works very well for hunting, great sights and hard hitting round:D

Mine has 4 deer on it, 3 from me. No pictures though :( I love the irons on that rifle. And it loves 150 grain Ballistic Tips.

Now that's hunting ;) , and they did a darn fine job of it too :D

Hemingway seemed to think so.

“There is no hunting like the hunting of man, and those who have hunted armed men long enough and liked it, never care for anything else thereafter.”

All relative though - don't want to be giving 'ammo' to the anti's. :D

Never served, and my deepest respect & gratitude to those who have, but I have to think that "those who...liked it" are in the minority.

Right on a few here have used their's for hunting. Well mine is currently sitting 35 miles inland on the back of my ATV stuck in snow/slush ... :D Gotta go retrieve it sometime this week ... not looking forward to that trip as this past weekend was faarken hell. I'm hoping I still get me a muskox with my Garand here soon. ;)

Hemmingway may have been a great writter, but he was wrong on a few fronts.

Most of the men that come back, those who truly did and do "hunt", come home with a distaste for killing. Obviously you can't say that everyone is the same, but I know more than a couple infantry types that have been to Afghanistan (some of them five times) who are no longer even interested in target shooting.

Great start a new thread to discuss ... meanwhile I'd like to hear about hunters with M1 Garands and pics and stories and such for ANIMALS not humans. Thank you,

Otokiak...I thought you North of the Arctic circle types used Snomobiles or dogsleds and lived in igloos;) What is up with the ATV?!

they're like shooting any other semi 30-06.

wow ...

This time of year machman it's always questionable what to ride outland to go hunt ... as there really isn't enough snow on the ground but lots of ice so usually use an ATV instead of a snowmobile ... but it's really a toss up as there is enough snow to get your quad stuck ... and well this year it's beyond mild and lots have gotten stuck over the last few weeks.

I'm going to go once again real soon but will take a snowmobile this time and a qamutiq ... I will get a muskox this year ... I will ... :D

p.s. let's see your hunting pics with your M1 Garand and hear some stories!?? Thank you! ;)

I took mine out for a hike with my father in the early season for deer with no luck, planning on getting out with it again soon though. Quite frankly I was happier carrying that old warhorse than with any other hunting rifle Ive ever carried, it made the trip much more enjoyable. Good luck with your quad Otokiak, and the best of luck with your muskox!

I got a few sealions again this year. Made a lot of people happy for the winter. The M1 Garand does just a good a job as the M14s. The Garand seems to dial in better than the Norc...
