M1 Garand: problem? or standard...?

ok, so i have a post war springfield M1, and when i push in the enbloc clip, as soon as its in all the way the bolt slams shut trying to take my fingers with it... now any other semi auto i have owned has stayed locked back until i release it. Is this a malfunction or is that just how the m1 works?

Also i always thougt you weren't supposed to be able to unlock the trigger guard for disasembly if the saftety was not engaged, but mine does no matter where the safety is... once again is this a malfunction or just how it operates?

Both of these things are normal. Practice holding back the bolt handle with your index finger while you press in the En-bloc with your thumb. Hope this helps!
 
lol... ugh.. it will only happen once and you will learn... The little tang sticking out on the oprod should go against your outer hand when you push the enbloc in. Then when your fingers are free and clear, you can move your hand and let the op rod slide forward.

I got a nasty bite when I was loading two rounds in for a service rifle match. M39A2 watched it happen, lol and I dont think he will ever let it go when I shoot the match with the M1... but, live and learn... Your M1 is operating normally...

Go there.. you can see how the tang is on the back of his hand while he pushes the en bloc in.... then move your fingers and let the oprod bang a round home into the chamber...
 
The bolt only 'stays open' when resting against the first round in a full 8 round clip, and even then it'll often slam the round home. You aren't a seasoned M1 Garand owner until you've given yourself Garand Thumb.

They've got a bolt hold open device in the M1 Carbine, but it's nothing more than a small pin and a divet drilled into the receiver below the op rod.
 
One more thing...put your thumb on the top of the en bloc straight in line with the receiver & barrel, not sideways. This way the bolt raises your thumb out of the way instead of pinching your thumb...as long as you don't allow your hand to ride forward. If you do it hurts twice as much.

I can remove the trigger group without the safety engaged on mine; sounds normal.
