The M1 Garand was replaced by the M14 rifle in US service. The M14 was an evolutionary development of the Garand and shared a number of components which are interchangeable with the Garand. Which parts are interchangeable between these two rifles?

:wave:N.B. This quiz excludes the Chinese-made Norinco/Polytech M14 clones or other civilian copies because at various times these rifles were/are made with various metric spec or off dimension parts which are not interchangeable with either the Garand or the US GI M14.

Dont forget:

Butt swivel
Lower butt plate screw
Extractor spring and plunger assembly
Hammer, hammer spring, hammer spring plunger
Trigger pin
Rear hand guard spring clip

Correct so far with posts #2 and 3. All rear sight components are interchangeable and therefore usable on both rifles. The M14 elevation pinion is different insofar as it is graduated in meters, rather than yards like the Garand pinion.

OK, no more bites so the remaining parts are a gimme; hammer spring housing and the hammer pin. Garand trigger/sear assemblies can also be used on the M14, but only for semi-auto function.;)

A comment on the Chinese Norinco/Polytech rear sight components. At various points in time these were made to metric spec or off dimension. Also, there are varying degrees of heat treatment on these which can make elevation pinion/aperture engagement very mushy-unlike the "real deal" GI components which are properly hardened and work very well. This is why a lot of Norinco/Polytech owners swap out the entire Chinese rear sight assembly for a GI one.

I've been stuck with all of the Chinese rear sight components after buying them on the understanding that they were GI components.:( If you want to sell any of the Chinese parts do others a favor by advertising them as that. Better still-sh@t-can them.
