M1 Garand Restore

The original finish was Parkerizing. Any gunsmith with tanks and the Brownell's kit can do it up.

What happened to the rifle to justify refinishing?

The metal was reblued some time ago and put in a ramline stock:( . The bore seems good and the parts are in good condition. I want to get it reparked and drop it into a boyds walnut stock.

Blued? Geezuz! Cold blued? Have it parkerized and get a proper stock. No need for a smithy though. Look in the Yellow Pages for metal finishers and call a few. Ask 'em if they can and will do firearms. Then out with all springs, tap a cast bullet into the muzzle and put an empty in the chamber. Send only the parts you want done. Include the gas tube. They're not supposed to take parkerizing, but mine did.

I have a bubba Springfield I would like to get the metal refinished. Anyone recommed a gunsmith that does that kind of work.

I don't know anyone in NS, but IIRC, Elwood Epps in Orillia ON does parkerizing. If you can't find anyone in NS, give Epps an email and see what his prices are. You'd have to add the shipping costs to your total cost though ;) but save any applicable PST and the GST here in ON is 7% instead of your 15% HST or whatever they call it in NS. :D

Are you sure that the rifle left the factory parkerized? Many of the early M1's were blued!! Springfield Armoury did a wonderfull job on mine in 1943!

Be careful about slagging a Ramline stock. I have one on a .308 Garand conversion. A Bubba gun has hacked and slashed irreplaceable metal or wood parts.

I find the plastic stock has a "whip" tendancy that softens some of the recoil. If I was giving lessons to a new shooter or someone not comfortable with recoil, this would be a first or second choice out of the gun locker.
