I found a private seller for an M1 Garand. SA serial number is in the 522,000 range, placing its manufacture date at April of 1942. Half the stock looks to be re-finished with gorgeous wood grain coming through. The hand guard seems to be the typical dull brown. What would you expect to pay for a rifle such as this with decent rifling, good wood, and metal in good order?

Does it have all of the original Springfield parts, especially the barrel, with drawing numbers corresponding to the manufacture date of the receiver? What are the markings on the stock? Have parts been re-finished? What percentage of original finish remains on the metal parts? Any rust or pitting on the metal? What is the bore condition like-any pitting, degree of wear at muzzle and throat? Are all parts complete and servicable?

If you had a rifle with all original or correct parts, original finish on wood and metal, sound and servicable bore and other parts, you might be looking at as much as $1500-$1700. Start discounting from there for refinished/mis-matching parts and re-finished wood and metal until you reached maybe $1200. Discount more for unservicable parts, rust and pitting, especially a well worn bore. A buyer might be looking at $500 for a barrel and installation costs and more still for re-parkerizing if required. Tough to say w/o pictures and a detailed summary of drawing numbers and markings on metal parts. There is a fair degree of subjectivity to classifying a rifle and setting a value on it. There is nothing magical about a 1942 receiver unless it comes with all of the other correct parts. Originality and condition are the bottom line to determine the value of a firearm.

Any cartouches left on the wood? As purple said you need to tear it down and check the drawing numbers to see if they correspond to the range of manufacture for April '42 receiver. At he very least check the bolt and rear sight for Lot or manufacturer codes. Does it have a lock bar on the rear sight?

What is the maker and what are other details as listed in the second post? A good, clean, sound and servicable of any make Garand with an unpitted/unworn barrel barrel seems to go for around $1100 on the EE these days. Maker, parts matched to the maker, originality of finish and condition will set the price.

That is exactly what I paid for mine. In this case an unworn barrel. Breda is the maker.
