Good day.

I just picked up a M1 Garand, has a Danish VAR barrel. I don't know a lot about Garands, this is our first one.

It came in an all plastic stock and my 14 year old son asked if it can be swapped to a wood stock. I did a search but didn't find answer so thought I'd ask.

Can any type of wood stock be used?

Is there a seller or place in Canada I can buy? I am in Edmonton, AB.

I see Numrich sells used stocks, the Italian versions they list won't fit but they have a bunch of others.

Finally, it looks like I'll need a metal butt plate and rear swivel. Any other metal pieces I missed?

I'm a complete Garand noob. Thanks in advance.

George

the Italian wont fit too short as they were made for 308

watch the EE there listed all the time

Google a parts diagram to see what your missing

You will need the hand guards as well for a complete look. As well as the hardware for the wood parts.
Lets see a picture or two. Was this one of the recent offerings from Wanstalls?

Buy your garand stock from brownells. They have them made by boyds but that are a higher grade of wood and better fit. Brownells will ship to Canada were as boyds will not over the $100 limit.

Thanks for the answers. Will take a look at Brownells & Boyds as well. I'm not really in a rush so will keep eye on EE as well.

Yes it was one of the Wanstalls guns. I picked up the last or 2nd last one they had.

Keep the plastic stock. I have found the recoil feels less with the plastic whippier stock. The grip is also slimmer, so if your son or someone with smaller hands will be shooting, especially while wearing gloves, it will work better than the wood stock.

Give Nick at Vulcan Gun Refinishing a call - he can set you right up with all the little extra parts etc, he will probably have a bunch of Boyds stuff in stock.

He refurbished the metal on 5 of my M1s as well (I had the stocks already) - spectacular work!!

I am a +1 on the boyds stocks not being great, I picked all mine up VIA https://www.dupagetrading.com/product-category/new-m1-stock-sets/ - it's an earlier pattern stock and doesn't feel as clunky.

They will not ship - you will have to use a USPS proxy or something.

Great idea, I should have thought of it earlier. I just talked to him a couple weeks ago on something else. Doing a mental forehead slap, sometimes I miss the obvious.

Yea - sometimes it's right in front of us. Nick may remember the stocks I had sent along with the guns, he had made a comment that they were a lot tighter than the Boyds. I notices on one that he had to inlet the stock a little bit to allow some more clearance for the op rod.

Boyds turn out pretty good.
Mine is also mated to a VAR barrel.

Thanks everyone for your great responses & the PM's. Really appreciate the help.

We're going to be handloading and going to the range when the weather warms up. Those paper targets are going to get blasted to bits!
