So, after years of hoping and many bouquets to convince the wife, I finally own an M1 Garand. Imagine my excitement! I took it apart, cleaned and greased as per Brownells instructional videos, and ran off to the range to play.... then the sadness came.
My new gun would fire 1-2 rounds, then eject the clip along with the remaining rounds (sometimes just up, sometimes all the way out of the gun and onto the ground). No worries I thought, I can figure this out. So, back home onto Google. All the reading I did suggested the clip-latch spring. So I ordered a new one and waited a week. When the new one arrived it was noticeably longer (15mm as opposed to 13mm for the old one).
Off to the range again, and now I can get usually 4 rounds to fire, then it ejects it all again. So now I turn to the knowledge base of hundreds of Garand users for some help. I don't want to just throwing random parts at it without some sort of direction. My next course of action was going to be to try and stretch the spring a bit, but I know that will kill it in short order, so if it's not the problem itself I don't want to monkey with it.
My next thought was a worn clip-latch, but it 'appears' ok? I don't know what the factory length of the actual "latch" part of the lever should be though, so if anyone has their gun apart and a set of calipers I would be very appreciative of a measurement.
Now I've read that the clip itself can be an issue, either worn out or too much parkerizing. I have a total of 10 clips, and they all seems to perform about the same.

Thank you everyone for the help!

Clip Ejects Early: Source ht tp://www.garandgear.com/m1-garand-enbloc-clip-problem.

This malfunction causes a partially loaded clip to eject before all the cartridge are fired. Start by inspecting the clip latch and spring as shown below. Inspect the stock in the area inletted to support the clip latch. If the stock is touching the clip latch arm, enlarge the inletted area until it no longer binds the latch arm.

Next verify the clip isn't warped or damaged and the notch to retain the clip isn't deformed or damaged.Try using a different clip and see if the problem persists.

Finish by inspecting the Follower Arm. Verify it's not bent and in spec.

If you have other part already swap them in 1 at a time

OR if you know someone with a working garand use their parts 1 at a time to trouble shoot yours

I have a few garands so it was easy for me to trouble shoot 1

I use NOS or new man clip latch and springs whats the length of your oprod spring?

I'm waiting for the slow internet to upload my images to share, but my op-rod spring measures ~18.75" long. I'm not sure if it's supposed to come off easily, but mine seems pretty well stuck on my op-rod. I figured best not to try to force it off since they mate in the gun anyways during use

Ok, here are some pictures to hopefully help

The clips. To me they appear in good shape. No loss of finish or signs of wear to indicate they are worn out

Op-Rod. I suppose I need to remove the spring and use a protractor to try and see if my angle is correct as per the post above. Trouble is, my spring seems stuck to the rod and I don't want to force it if I don't have to

I looked at one of my aftermarket clip latch M1 Garand .. the corners on mine are more square not rounded like yours ... the end with the spring you can also see on your picture a shiny spot on the top... Right hand side is a bit of a angle .. Flat on top

Thanks for the insight. I have a friend of a friend who I am trying to meet up with to compare his functioning Garand to mine. Hopefully this thread helps me narrow my search

I had this issue when i first got mine. New clip latch and spring solved the issue! The spring was pretty weak compared to the new one but i swapped the latch with it as well as i bought the two parts together!

Well there it is, the Op-rod spring, must be at least 19" and a max length of 20 1/2". too short and it will recoil hard and release the enbloc.
What bullet weight are you shooting?
I'm shooting 150g .308 in my Garand

I'm having a heck of a time finding parts in Canada. I found one site in the States that has new production latches and all the springs, but they don't ship to Canada. I'm in the process now of figuring out if shipping it to the UPS store across the line and bringing it back will be a hassle or no issue...

you CAN NOT legally bring gun parts or accessories out of the USA without a permit

gun parts corp ship here legally

Thanks for the insight. I ordered from Numrich. I have coming a new production clip latch, Wolffspring kit which includes the op-rod spring along with others, an op-rod just in case since they are only $9usd, and a handful of new en-bloc clips. This collection of goodies should hopefully solve any and all problems. Thanks again for everyone's insight

Numrich has sold both the US GI springs and the stainless steel springs made by Fulton Armory. Brownells also sells the Fulton springs. These are good and allow the rifle to function reliably; I've used dozens of them. The Wolff springs are too long and need to be cut back to specified length.

Wish I would have known this... why would new production springs be made too long?
