I have owned an M1 Garand for 2 years and I’ve wanted it take it out hunting, I’ve been looking into laws and regulations about hunting with them and about the 8rnd Enblocs. I was wondering if its better to be safe and try and find a 5rnd hunting clip or just use the 8rnds

That is up to your tolerance for risk. The penalties for breaking hunting regs can be pretty severe compared to the level of the offence and it isn't that hard to buy some 5 round clips to be legal.

I have great contempt for government and our numerous retarded laws. I refuse to abide by many of them, but this isn't one I will ignore just to avoid buying a couple 5 round clips.

Seems like it’d be pretty easy to modify with basic tools. Break out your PPE and give it a shot. Looks like there’s a few utoob vids to guide you
Let us know how ya do

In Alberta the regulations state it is unlawful to:

2. Set out, use or employ any of the following items for the purpose of hunting big game:

an auto-loading firearm that has the capacity to hold more than 5 cartridges in the magazine,

So while the Federal Firearms Act allows for the Garand at design capacity, the provincial regulations for Big Game do not

Found this.

Yes, you can legally hunt with 8 rounds in an M1 Garand in Canada
. The M1 Garand is specifically exempted from the 5-round magazine capacity laws for semi-automatic center-fire rifles under federal law. While most semi-autos are limited to 5 rounds, the M1 Garand’s 8-round en-bloc clip is legal for hunting.

The OP needs to check the hunting regulations for his province.

That fails to take into account the individual province's hunting regulations. So it's legal for hunting, where permitted by hunting regs.

Ehhhh, I wouldn't go by that. Its exempt from the 5 round limit as to max capacity but a hunting reg will trump that. These are 2 totally and separate issues.

I have been looking into a lot just the last post I saw anyone talk about it was in 2010 but they said you could and had been hunting with the 8rnds. I’ve been trying to find the 5rnd one but most of the ones I find are in the states and won’t ship up to Canada

He’s from Ontario, so 5 rounds max.

Does a 5 round enbloc qualify in Ontario?

A 5 round enbloc passed muster in Alberta when I hunted with my Garand.

No you can't. As posted above, the mag cannot be capable of holding more than 5 rounds.

So how do you get around the fact a M1 Garand magazine can hold either a 8 round or smaller En-bloc clip?

John Garand in his 1930 Patent on the Garand rifle even mentioned numerous times (13), that the En-bloc clip is inserted into the rifle magazine!

Here is just one example copied from his patent # US1892141A -

`The operation of the firearm is as follows:

To operate as a hand-operated arm, the muzzle piece is screwed in to seat against the muzzle of the barrel, thus cutting off' entry be formed to receive the of gas to the cylinder and piston. The bolt may then be retracted manually through the bolt handle.

To operate semi-automatically, the muzzle piece is screwed out away from the muzzle of the barrel to allow a desired amount of gas to enter the cylinder and act on the piston.

A clip containing cartridges is inserted in the magazine, being held in place therein by the clip latch. This action depresses the follower, rocks the connecting rod catch to free the clip latch and connecting rod, and also moves the indicator to register full magazine. Insertion of the clip releases the bolt which moves forward, inserting a cartridge in the chamber and leaving the arm in a position to be fired.

Upon firing the bolt remains locked until the bullet has passed from the barrel, allowing the gases of explosion to enter the cylinder and force the piston and connecting rod rearwardly. Rearward movement of the connecting rod cams the bolt to unlocked position and at the same time cams the firing pin to safe position, then carries the bolt rearwardly allowing the extractor to extract the empty shell which is then ejected by the ejector.

Movement of the piston, connecting rod and bolt rearwardly, compresses the spring housed in the connecting rod, thereby assuring sufficient pressure on the follower rod to actuate the follower to force a cartridge from the clip into the path of the bolt on its forward movement which movement is caused by the expansion of the aforesaid spring.

The combination with a gun, including a magazine, of a clip for insertion in the magazine, means for latching the clip in place, a follower, means for actuating the follower to force cartridges from the clip, means actuated by actuation of the follower' when the clip is empty to unlatch the clip, and a resilient element secured to the bottom of the magazine for automatically expelling the clip when unlatched.

I thought the M1 was exempt from the 5 rounds thing. Did they change the Firearms Act?
Hunting rules for large and small game are provincial. Migratory game rules are federal. Each province decides its own firearms and cartridge rules. Completely different set of rules from whatever the feds decide to impose.
