What does the Firearms Act have to do with provincial hunting regulations?I thought the M1 was exempt from the 5 rounds thing. Did they change the Firearms Act?

The OP is not the first person to ask about loading fewer rounds in a Garand. There are ways to internally limit a pingey so it can't take 8 rounds. The Conservation Officer won't care if he ejects 5 rounds from a 8-round "clip" it is still over-capacity according to the game regulations. The judge probably isn't interested in wordplay about patent language either. So, play within the rules and nothing gets complicated. Can simply load 5 roundsinto an 8 rounder
Federal firearms law always beats provincial regulation. The same as not being allowed to hunt with handguns. What does the Firearms Act have to do with provincial hunting regulations?
Ohh. OkNo you can't. As posted above, the mag cannot be capable of holding more than 5 rounds.

I haven’t been able to find them, do you have a link?$27.39 on eBay plus shipping from Italy. I’d just buy one to stick in there for hunting and not worry about it again

I pm’d him he’s from Ontario……OP - What province? Have you checked the regulations? Do you actually need a 5 shot clip?
We are talking hunting regs and CO's, so they tend to be much more practical than federal law and agents of the state. Make sure you only have 5 round clips on you when hunting and the CO will never bother asking about hypothetical 8 rounders that you have at home.So how do you get around the fact a M1 Garand magazine can hold either a 8 round or smaller En-bloc clip?
This is the appropriate post to pay attention too in this topic. So how do you get around the fact a M1 Garand magazine can hold either a 8 round or smaller En-bloc clip?
John Garand in his 1930 Patent on the Garand rifle even mentioned numerous times (13), that the En-bloc clip is inserted into the rifle magazine!
Here is just one example copied from his patent # US1892141A -
Again, how did people ever legally hunt with a semi-auto that takes box mags? Because they care about what you are actually hunting with, not something that you aren't, that's how.The key wording is "capable of holding" and a Garand is still "capable" of holding 4,5 or 8 round en-blocks.
Hunting regs. - danI thought the M1 was exempt from the 5 rounds thing. Did they change the Firearms Act?
The reality is that they didn't hunt legally, they just weren't challenged over it ...yet...but if it ever does come up as a "test case" i'm betting on the courtroom version of what is legal will trump your version.Again, how did people ever legally hunt with a semi-auto that takes box mags? Because they care about what you are actually hunting with, not something that you aren't, that's how.
Can anyone that subscribes to this position point to any prosecution, anywhere in Kanada, that claimed someone was illegally hunting because his rifle could take mags of more than 5 rounds, but only had 5 round mags in his possession?

And a judge would be the one to define the outcome…….Or why not just phone the CO and get the information from the horses mouth? They are the ones who you will run into and judge you in the field.
At least somebody else gets it. People have been hunting with box mag fed semi-autos for many decades and this has never been an issue.I wonder out loud how we navigated with our M305’s and pinned 20 round mags, when we hunted with them?
Or my buddy that had a detachable curved maged SKS got by deer hunting with nothing but a 2 cent pop rivet in the mag?
Ed Zackerly! At least somebody else gets it. People have been hunting with box mag fed semi-autos for many decades and this has never been an issue.
As a secondary question, has anyone ever had a CO check mag capacity while hunting? Aside from bird hunting I've never experienced it. My limited contact with CO's has shown they care that your gun is unloaded in/on a vehicle and that you have the appropriate licenses and tags, nothing more.

Marstar used to stock the 5 round clipsThat is up to your tolerance for risk. The penalties for breaking hunting regs can be pretty severe compared to the level of the offence and it isn't that hard to buy some 5 round clips to be legal.
I have great contempt for government and our numerous retarded laws. I refuse to abide by many of them, but this isn't one I will ignore just to avoid buying a couple 5 round clips.
