I was wondering if anybody has had the same first immpression of the M1. I put 96 rounds through a newly purchased/re barrelledM1 today. I have owned a lot of firearms with iron sights only and never achieved anything close to what I did today. I was able to put 16 rounds into 2" at about 85-90m. I've had no success like this before. I must say that this platform is capable. The combination of the long sight radius and 24" barrel set it apart from most other firearms. The ability of this rifle is impressive. I felt today that this rebuilt rifle was very close to what was expected of this battle implement initially. It has proved to be the most accurate semi auto I have ever encounterd. FU Norinco.

A good barrel with good ammo and the sights on M1 Rifles do add up to amazing accuracy. 85 to 90 meters is too close though. Your groups still won't be much bigger at 100.
What ammo?

I have routinely hit 8" steel gongs at 300m with my '43 M1 in .30-06. I reload using Hornady 150Gr FMJ BT pushed by 49.5Gr IMR 4064. I find that particular load to be very accurate in my rifle. The M1 is a great platform and will perform very well with a little practice. Best accuracy would no doubt be obtained by tuning a particular load to your rifle.

Regards,

They are a great rifle overall and very accurate.

The very first time I fired an M1 was abour four years ago. I had acquired it about a week before and set up a target at 100 yards. My dad was on the spotting scope and could not believe his eyes. My first three rounds were around 1.5", and a full eight round en-bloc gave me a very respectable group of just over 2" (off the bench and on a sandbag). If I thought I loved that rifle just by the fit and feel of it, I KNEW I loved it after one clip. A week later I flattened my moose with this rifle with one round.

Ok, you are pretty new here so I'll let it slide. I must say though, to some of us here your post is kinda like posting "Hey guys is it just me or does your Lamborghini pull to the left when you accelerate?" :p

I have not been lucky enough to come across an M1 when I've had the money to spend on one. Even then the only ones I've ever seen for sale are on the EE here. Congrats on finding such a historic and accurate rifle!

And the part I'm most upset about... where are the freakin pictures man??? :D

I'm thinking about picking up a Garand once my cards arrive. Is there any definitive resources I can look at to learn more about them?

Just from watching the EE here, I note that there are many manufacturers, both domestic and international, there are refurbs and non refurbs etc etc.

My instincts tell me to try and find a Springfield in .30-06, but that is where it ends. They are non-restricted, right?

I have been playing around with military rifles for 40 years and the Garand as always been my favorite!

What was that fella Patton saying "piece of junk, better to throw rocks..."
No wait, he described it as the "greatest implement of war ever devised". Mind you, he said a lot of things I laugh at.

I've been hunting for a good price on a nice garand myself.
