He takes a pretty good picture too :)

Nick does good work indeed. Just out of curiosity, is that a new HS barrel on the M1903? I'm prompted to ask because I don't see an arsenal prick punch mark in the bomb symbol which indicates arsenal proof firing after re-barreling. On the Garands, the gas cylinders show up as a grey, rather than the usual black colour. Were they refinished with a grey spray on/bake on coating?

Those are some NICE rifles, almost too pretty to shoot, ESPECIALLY your 1903!!!!!(I'm sure you already know this, but for those who don't, the receiver on that 1903 was made in 1928-according to Hatcher's Notebook).

Dunno, if it was re-barreled it wasn't by me. Though nick said it gauges like a new barrel so ... :) which makes sense because that gun is spooky accurate..
The gas tubes are just parked, I decided to leave them like that - kinda like it better :)

@shredder, yes - I did look up the serial at one point ;)

The High Standard (HS) replacement barrels for the M1903 are very good shooters. I've installed 2 NOS HS barrels over the past couple of yrs and have been very satisfied with them. High Standard also produced the original 4 groove M1903-A3 barrels for Smith Corona which are coded SC, rather than HS.

The Garand gas cylinder, lock and screw are stainless steel which doesn't accept Parkerizing very well. They can be sandblasted to activate the surface somewhat. This normally results in a light grey color. You can use a stainless steel blackener, such as that made by Caswells, to refinish these parts. Some folks use flat black high temp cylinder head paint to re-coat these parts which works well, but isn't totally immune to some bore solvents. If you use the spray on paint you need to block/mask the interior of the cylinder and the stud for the front sight before spraying to prevent an accumulation of paint in these areas.

I had no real intention of painting the gas cylinders - I like them like that.
But *IF* I were, I would probably go with a matte powder coat, that way the color could be matched exactly. :)
