Hello.....

Just a question for all you M1 Garand shooters.
What is the furthest known distance, that you would call successful target shooting of your M1?
I am primarily interested in iron/match sight results, but if you have an
M1C/M1D, real or pseudo sniper variant, I must admit I am curious of that as well.
This does not have to be witnessed or formal match results, and whatever
shooting position, so please post with honesty in mind.

Cheers

In my book "Inside The Crosshairs:Snipers in Vietnam" They give it a effective range out to 500 meters. That is using the standard 2.5X scope.

Yes Gibbs505, also an excellent read is,
"13 Cent Killers, 5th Marine Snipers Vietnam." Quite a few near examples
(+600 yards!) with the M1C/M1D.
I meant target shooting, not to say anything to tear down the combat shooting aspects.
Because everyone knows a Garand is well up to that task.

Just wondering if anyone as of late, here, has done so...
Cheers

I do not have one so I cannot speak from experance. However I have read that at Camp Perry, the Garand was shot out to about 600 yards or so with open sights.

I haven't read "13 Cent Killers, 5th Marine Snipers Vietnam." so I must get a copy sometime!!

May be dating myself, but we qualified at 500 yds with the ones we were issued. What's a meter???

international yard is equal to:
  • 0.5 fathom (1 fathom is equal to 2 yards)
  • 3 feet (1 foot is a third of a yard)
  • 36 inches
  • 0.9144 metre (1 metre is equal to about 1.0936 international yards)
.

For a while the DCRA ran a vintage 3-gun match as part of the DCRA national matches. I won it one year with a No.4, M1 and a No.4(T). Another year I shot a borrowed M1D, but didn't place as well. That was 300yds at the round 300yd bullseye, which is a 1-5 with a V. The match could have easily been at 500yds considering the skill of the OTHER shooters. I just had three good strings.

That particular M1D was made up from the appropriate parts, so it counts as a pseudo sniper rifle. It was the most awkward rifle I have ever held up to my face. The leather cheekrest has a thick felt pad to push your head off the centreline. The scope of course is sidemounted to clear the 'pingey'. I found I had to consciously level the crosshairs with every shot. My natural hold wanted to compensate for being out of position. If I didn't deliberately force the crosshairs left and down, the group strung out from 8 o'clock to 2 o'clock. At long range, that kind of gross mis-geometry will miss everytime.

Hi Maple Leaf Eh,

The offset scope and line of sight needs 3/4 minute correction past 200 yards (to the left) in order to be on target. The lateral drift is constant obviously. :)

It can be shot even for a south paw but you need to work hard to maintain any sort of cheekweld..........

I agree with you that it is not the best sniping rifle around but w/o scope it is still a fantastic weapon in the right hands.

regards,

claude.

Oh you mean that french system that their dictator imposed on his conquered territory?
Ita an arbitrary measurement since they got their base wrong.

That's the one - the one the US officially adopted in 1899 :p

At 100 metres from prone an M1 in any flavor is the equal of a lot of modern rifles when equipped with only iron sights.

Hmmm, kind of reminds me of when our "dictator" Trudeau imposed the metric system on us...not that anyone at all wanted it. I still think in inches and miles per hour to this day...

Thank you for the input fellow Garand shooters.
I have only been an M1 Rifle shooter in the past six years. And in the past 4 I have begun to fire it at distances beyond 300 yards or so.
At a black rifle shoot at Genesee range Pigdog and Silverback were with me, and we tried out this rifles first long range "ring out" This was also the same shoot when Ben also brought out his ferret 50 calibre rifle out as well!!!
Yah baby!!!
That was the first time any of us shot this particular M1 rifle at 400 yards.
Two summers ago, after I tried her out at 500 yards here in Cold Lake, with some success after a few opening shots.
Just this past August In Saskatchewan, I was very happy to try my M1 out at 600 yards with some very good results.
(18 X 18 inch metal gong)

So hence this post, that I keep a close eye on to see anyone else's experiences and successes.
PS, I cheated a bit and this rifle has a match front sight.

Again I thank all contributors.....

I competed for the first time this past summer in a 600 yard belly match (prone match) at a club in Midland Michigan. Fired a 519/600, I was pleased! I'm headed back on October 28th for another match and don't see why I can't end up a bit closer to 550/600. It's a Boy Scout Fundraiser shoot and makes a good excuse to get to the range. BTW, in High Power, Prone matches and at Camp Perry the rifle I prefere is my 5.4M Springfield that I bought thru our CMP.

Ah, a man after my own heart!
Our largest trading partner and best friends use inches and miles.
Our "old country" (which we share with the US) still uses inches and miles, as well. Yes, Britain still uses MPH and buys gas (I guess it's petrol over there) by the gallon.
Good old PET  in an effort to make us more European, shoved the metric system down our throats.
Piss on him and all like him (it's much more politically correct to say "piss on Trudeau" since the truth came out that he was an anti-semite in his younger years). :p
And to all you young 'uns out there... when's the last time you saw/heard the news describing a suspect in centimeters and kilograms?
The forced metric system is probably the epitome of the waste and folly of the Liberal Party. If not bilingualism. Or multiculturalism. Or "entitled to entitlements". Or...

Of course with car parts being made worldwide, one does encounter it from time to time.
That's because it was 1988 not 1899.
Ohio had "bilingual" speed limit signs for awhile back in the late '80s and early '90s, posted on the interstates of all places. But more than a few years ago, they disappeared and the traditional MPH signs are the only ones to be seen now.
Now click this link (a dot gov website) to see how some people were (I'm sure some still are) pushing for metrication:
