Here is a vid I put together today on how to take an M1 series bolt apart and then reassemble it. I participated in a thread lately about this topic, and this is what I learned so I figured I share it. Many of the responses in the thread have been to leave it alone if you don't have the need. Learning this I see it's unfounded to be so tentative about taking the bolt apart and of all the ways I've discovered, this has got to be the simplest. Enjoy!

PS: This my first ever YouTube video. I recorded it with an iPhone, and I fumble my words a few times so please, be gentle.

I like it and I'm offering to toss this video in the stick(ies).

Sound decent? I like your confident technique. I'm just warning the Norc bolt owners, your ejector pin has lots and lots of attitude, so be ready for some fun (and suprises).... :D

Cheers,
Barney

lol I learned this same technique from watching some old armourer video tape on the M1/M14 from the 80's.

It was funny to watch this older guy do it so easily with his bare hands and a couple dirt simple tools then compare it to the stigma of people on these forums towards it.

Also, you mean I don't need to buy that gigantic ridiculously overpriced bolt tool!?
:D

Great vid:) The Garand bolt is very easy to take down with the combination tool. On my Norc M14, the ejector and and extractor springs are stiff like hell but with the M14 combination tool, removing the extractor is quite easy and using a 30-06 case in chamber, hammer resting on the bolt is all that needed to compress the ejector spring and a very small screwdriver is very helpful to compress the extractor plunger a little to help snaping it in place.

LOL. That old video is the genesis of this technique. A part-time gunsmith buddy back home has a few of these old videos. They look terrible by today's standards but have real gems of knowledge in them such as this technique.

I was also struck by the simplicity vs the stigma here on CGN for taking the bolt apart. Part of my motivation to post it.

Sticky away. Hopefully people find it useful and removes some of the stigma with taking the bolt apart.

Thanks Barney.

I hope to make it to one of your clinics one day. The last one in Borden was too close to turkey season to get the missus to let me out.

nicely done and explained, are you a teacher?

Negative. I write software for a living. Wish I did teach though. I'd make the leap in a second if given the chance. I enjoy teaching and have been told by many when doing training that I should be a teacher. Maybe a career change one day...

Finally, a good way to do this in the field, without too many bells and whistles. Question? What is the size of the punch?

LOL. The one that fits the in the extractor pin hole...

I have a punch set and grabbed the one that closest matches the diameter of the pin. Mic'ing it now though shows me its 0.133"
