In the stock of my M1, the cleaning kit has a small grease container with a dark red colour grease...what type is this, who makes it, and where can I get it?

I'm currently useing Lubriplate 130 MilSpec "USGI" grease used for M1/M14 rifles from Brownells. Works great but I noticed the red grease stayed in place better, and was a little slicker... anyone know about this?

The red-brown grease is Plastilube. Plastilube was/is interchangeable with Lubriplate - both have been issued with garands interchangeably over the years, as well as the M14.

I get mine usually at gunshows.

get it at gunshows i used to import the cases of the stuff but post 9/11 the gus decided it was for m14's and therefore could not be exported....

Is there any reason you couldn't use the high quality grease you put in a grease gun? You can get high quality(moly etc) grease for 3-4$ per tube. I know it's not the "correct" grease, but it's easy to come by.

Read Hungry's comments in the Main Battle Rifle forum re M14 and Garrand maintenance. The wrong grease will cause your #### to fall off...

Lionel toy trains used the same lubriplate.
Now if you want the original stuff that went in the butt trap, I have a small supply and could send you a few of those plastic containers
