M1 reload fail

So I was working my way down through McCann gas plug screws and when I used 3/5 screw, it started cycling. However shot 5 of 8 failed to feed properly. The bolt didn't close fully, with the bullet stuck in the throat and the cartridge rim sticking out on an angle with the bolt stopped short of battery. It bent at the neck down portion of the cartridge. So the rear of the cartridge was sticking out like a stove pipe eject. I'm wondering if this means I need to move to the smaller gas plug screw or is this a failure caused by the en bloc clip or anything else.

Oh I should mention I was working my way through the gas screws that would cycle commercial federal blue box 150 grain soft point 30-06

Most military weapons have a strong crimp so they will function through semi and full automatic weapons.

I put a heavy crimp on my .30-06 cartridges for my Garand using a Lee Factory Crimp Die.

Are you referring to the case rim? I don't reload so I'm not sure what the crimp is.

The crimp is where the case gets pinched into a little groove (cannelure) in the bullet after the bullet has been pushed to the right depth into the case. Purpose: keep the bullet in the same place for consistency of length and pressure; help seal against moisture, to name two

Is there such thing as too much oomph with 150 blue box in a Garand that cycles properly??

Sounds like you fixed the issue the smaller plug.
