M10x: Beyond the Distributer Thoughts

Cz858 in a second over the other options. NOT a CSA Vz58, an original Cz858 (better quality in my experience.... Cz>CSA)

Yes, the long barrel looks goofy, but lots of aftermarket stuff is available to mod it your way.

Ive owned and shot these 7.62 rifles
VZ52 rifle
Russian SKS
SKS D
Chinese SKS
MX10
Valmet M78 7.62x39
Type 81
VZ-58/CZ-858

Not gonna lie about the MX10

The best overall gun in my opinion is the VZ-58/CZ-858. its light and probably the most accurate followed closely by the Valmet M78 but it is a lot longer and heaver being based off the AK RPD receiver. The barrel is a lock thicker on the Valmet so after a long stringer of ammo it may hold its accuracy better than a VZ but never checked that. Most of the SKS's, type 81, VZ 52 seem shoot about the same average groups with military ball ammo. The MX10 which I was quite hopeful for is nothing to write home about in terms of accuracy. It does not shoot any better than the guns I just mentioned. We tried two different MX10, with approx a dozen boxes of different civilian and military ammo. Its a 3" gun AT BEST. Every group that seemed promising with 2-3 rounds close together would open up with 1-2 flyers. I still like the gun, for offhand shooting at 100 yards at steel you can't miss but a long range DMR it is not. I still own it, I enjoy the AK mag compatibility, and cheek weld with a red dot. I took the scope off after accuracy testing cause in my opinion this gun isn't accurate enough to warrant needing a scope and decided to just keep it light(er). It is well machined, and the bolt movement is extremely smooth. The trigger is far too light, like you can easily bump fire accidentally and send off two rounds, maybe a bonus for some, but annoying to me. The changing handle occasionally gets loose and launches itself into the grass. Bartok informed me of the Oring trick to keep it secure and that seems like a reasonable fix to me. Should it cost what it does? No, but IMHO then a type 81 should be more like a $600 gun in our market based on the chinese SKS like quality. I wish it had a lighter barrel, how much worse can the acurracy get, give up on that and go lighter if its a lost cause? And a lighter receiver with more metal machined off and a heavier trigger. If the fix these issues on the next generation they may be worth getting, only buy it now if you can live with these deficiencies

The picture here shows a Trigger Tech trigger which has since been replaced with a basic milspec trigger (was getting light strikes on some ammo types). I also took the TT cost off to get to the estimate of $2100. Picking up some parts either used or on for good sale prices also helped to keep my cost down.

That's a nice setup! what kind of groups are you getting out of that? I'm thinking about probably building my own when I get some spare time.

There is a fellow here on CGN who has 19,000 (yes 19k) through his XCR ….maybe he'll chime in. I think he has praise for the XCR-L.:)

XCR-L in 7.62x39.

Was playing with mine today. Haven't had it out for a while. Terrible gun to shoot compared to my VZ-58 and my Modern Sporter. The XCR-L runs really nice but it's heavier in all the wrong places and simply not as nice to shoot. Today really made me remember why I haven't had the XCR-L out in a while.

Hornady Black 123 gr SST is shooting most groups about an inch and a quarter average. PMC Bronze fmj can be kept under 2 inches easily. This is with a 1-6x optic. I'm pretty sure the IBI barrel is capable of better than that with some more magnification but it's an x39, nobody really buys one to try and print tiny groups.

No idea what it would do with surplus because I have the XCR or the VZ-58 for shooting junk through.

Keymod upper with light barrel?

Keymod upper with heavy barrel

The heavy barrel is the problem.

My competition length XCR with the light barrel vs. Vz58 with a CTR stock, Zhukov handguard, and Dlask brake = XCR feels lighter and less front heavy.
(XCR sans scope, and Vz sans optic rail and side rail, of course)

A Vz with a fixed stock, factory handguard, and no muzzle device is lighter and handier than my XCR competition model.
