m14 30(5), (20)5?

You do realize that magazines for semi-automatic rifles in canada are banned if they hold more than 5 rounds (or aren't pinned to 5), right?

Ya Prosper .. I thought that too. I think he may mean that he tried the mag "down South" as in the US. As for my 30/5's .. they are simply a LCF toy. They do sit the rifle well on the ground for prone. As far as I have been able to determine .. the 30 rounders were never produced in the US for the military. They are clearly aftermarket. They MAY be US made .. they are NOT USGI. Mine work fine .. with 5 rounds in them. The spring is certainly weak. Take them for what they are worth I guess. :D

Was the 30 rounder ever an issue item? I can only recall, 20's in the US military, unless the Isreali's manufactured them when they got a boatload of 14's.

no, they weren't an issue item- the lmg operator was simply issued more 20 rounders- there may have been some in r&d, but the closest the m14 got to being a real lmg was having a heavy barrel produced and called the m15 for a short time-the m14 in lmg mode was really just a select fire- the isreali m14s were all either put down for parts or sniper rifles- this is well documented- so, no ,no 30 rounders there either- besides, your mag pouches no longer work- the m14 lmg operator carried 4 20 round pouches instead of the usual 2- on the belt- 160 rounds as opposed to 80- and the bayonet was replaced by a compensator- and then we get into the e2 stock

There was never more than 20 rounds in a GI mag, the US did play with thermold, plastic, plastic w/metal feed lips, and aluminum.

A few companies have tried to make a reliable 30......I think the only reliable one past twenty is a new one that looks GI, holds 25. The biggest issue is the springs and the fact that the mags of the m14 are straight.
With all that brass to push the springs don't last,

Years ago I did pick up some plastic 35's......never tried them....actually they have never been put together...they just sit in various bags.. I don't imagine they work that well......but I seem to collect od-ball m14 stuff.....like a McCann scope mount.....and isreali modified op-rods.

I can't wait for the Beta-C that was supposed to be out winter 2005, as soon as my firends to the south get one....I'll share it with you.

modified israeli op rods? how precisely- i've always wondered why there's a 8-32 thread sticking out of each one of my isreali op rods on the back side- i was told it was there so you could attach a cleaning rod section to it and #### it with a shell catcher in place, and i can see how it's done( it's like a sideways t- handle for cocking)

Why do some people always have to be so anal in regards to all the stupid rules of magazine capacity. We have all taken a course and know well the laws so I do not think it helpful to keep reminding us all of the five round limit. There is no need to keep playing the politically correct, law-abiding, up-standing responsible firearm owning Canadian citizen/drone of the year.
This repititious reminding gets tiresome and insulting.

Here was the modified M14's that the Isreali's played with.....bullpup style.
They moved the finger tab from the end of the op-rod....to the heel/elbow area.....see the round knob.

And here is one of the op-rods on my old set up....all that's left is a receiver, bolt, barrel and op-rod......:( I'll re-build her one day. The placement is really nice when you have the sage set at it's shorter settings....you can reach over (not with this scope on it) with your other hand to work it....or better just use your bolt release.

And as for this

I agree with you....in a perfect world.....but we are always being watched by the 'outsiders' that want to rat or scorn us....we are reminding them....that we know the rules. Probably a liability issue also.

Sorry to offend some people, some of you who haven't had the oppertunity to see the praries, where we go shooting, there are no trees, no lakes... nothing, the occasional sage brush and that is it...for miles and miles. I don't think it is such a bad thing to use my mirror as a rest, I also use the hood, sometimes the tailgate. My truck is my bench. And it is private land that we have permision to shoot on. I am a proud redneck, have been brought up this way, and this is the way I will stay. So sorry again if I gave the guys out west "a bad name", but until you have been to Alberta, think about what you say.

thanks- mine look nothing like that, just standard op-rods with that 8x32 screw sticking out of the center- that said, i have seen a pic of these on what looks to be a geodesic tripod and brass catcher attached in a bunker somwhere on the heights- had a MAG-58 or something sharing the same bunker- maybe the m14 was for sniping and the mag was for when things really got hairy- maybe it's a field expedient mod or something- anyway, it's on all 3 of my fellas- trw, springy and h&r- one of these days i'm goingto try to get a winchester as well

So could one theoretically manufacture a high capacity magazine that would be straight at the top for insertion into the rifle, then curve to relieve pressure on the spring and allow for better feeding?

Hmmmmm.

PS And then pin it to five if you lived in Canada, of course. LOL.

I think you've got it. :)

Is the SAGE set-up southpaw friendly?

I don't think a Sage has any effect on the southpaw......the rifle is the issue.
My buddy is a SP and after a little use he has no issues with the M-14, saged or regular.

I think Ontario is a disgusting Liberal place to live. Get bent.

Ontario is a pretty good place to live actually, maybe you should lay off. The ugly comment was unwarranted but yours was even lower class. Congrats, you represent your province well!

How amusing - everyone is just alittle defensive about where they live... Good to see but remember it is ALL Canada and the laws are for everyone...

HP

PS - Unless old Eddie (New Leader) changes things here in Alberta.

Back up a sec. Ontario IS a liberal place to live. Look at the officials they insist on electing, over and over.

And I think we can all agree that Liberals are disgusting.

So unless you're all offended by the 'get bent' line, his comments were just a statement of fact.

Back on track though, a semi-auto is reasonably leftie-friendly, although I imagine it would be a little distracting having hot brass ejected across one's face. Such is life I suppose, you have to play the cards you're dealt. Most the lefty's I know (a few in my family) have learned to shoot right handed
