Okay maybe one of the stranger ideas.

Has anyone else wondered if it was possible to convert an m14 to .45acp. I am waiting for the barrels to do the conversion of a enfield to .45. But has anyone put any thought into converting an m14. They are inexpensive and plentiful so what would the amount of work be. What would you have to change?

If its completely strange I will delete this thread and never admit to starting it.

:ar15:

Did you just jump your chain? (couldn't resist)

Seriously though, I think you would have a lot of work to do, and way more than with a bolt action rifle, since you would have the gas system to deal with to ensure reliability.

I already have a 1911 :p

Darn you brought up the tomy, well that would be nice to have one but being prohibited by name that is likely never going to happen.

I am going to build a .45 enfield with one of Jauns barrels.

I still think it would be very cool to build, might be easier with a mini-30.

The gas system would take some building and changing to get right but it is likely doable, just maybe not affordable.

be fun to try with an sks as the gas sytem would be much easier to mess with...... but no barrels out there to source for such a project. I don't think it would be at all financially feasable to attempt with the m14.

Just looking at my old copy of American Survival Guide -Jan.1995 Vol#1. They have a good article about converting an M1 Carbine into a 45 Winchester Magnum. Try LeMag 201 Main Street Dept ASG Fenton Mi. 48430. This is the address from the mag so its an old address.

would you really need to use the gas system? just by finding the right weight of spring couldn't it basically be blow back operated, like a submachine gun

That's what I was thinking!!! You could modify the oprod so that the camming channel would not cam it closed, but then you'd also have to modify the bolt head substantially too. It could be done, I'm certain of that...but it would likely be too expensive to be worthwhile, and require a LOT of tuning to get it running dependably.

An SKS, converted to straight blowback might work...the bolt/carrier assembly seems heavy enough to handle that, and the overall strength would be perfect...but you might find the barrel area may not have enough width to handle the wider chamber of the .45acp., and still thread safely. But no gas system.

Then again...if you were thinking bolt-action, maybe you could consider doing an M-14 into .45, but use it full rotating locking, no gas system. Meaning you'd be turning it into a "straight pull"...still cost you some bucks though.

Frankly I think your best bet would be the Marlin Camp Carbine in .45!

M14 to 45 ACP...could be interesting.

I just wished someone would manufacture a non-silenced copy of the the Delisle bolt rifle in 45 ACP. Or maybe a completely new system short barrel 12.5" bolt action 45 ACP rifle.

You can get the .45acp barrel and mag adapter for the enfield, Jaun is getting some in.

The cool thing is that all you have to do to change over to acp for the bolt is lengthen the extractor by a bit, other wise the .45acp and the .308 round are very close to the same diameter, this is why the bolt in the enfield .45acp setup just requires you rework the extractor.

So if you convert it to blow back, how would you stop it from ram firing?

I don't think that would be a problem. Still has a normal hammer/pin, unlike an old smg that has a firing pin machined into the bolt face. As long as you kept it clean, it would be fine.

Given that there are AR based 9mm carbines, no reason one could not be made up in 7.62x25.
As far as converting a M-14 to .45 goes, I suppose anything could be made to work with enough effort. It would certainly not be an easy conversion.

there was an old timer a few years back at my old club who converted a M1 carbine to .45acp...fair amount of work was involved as i recall. If you have the time and money go ahead and convert a M14. Keep good notes for us.
