So,
was going to try out my M14/305 today...

Shot around with my handguns for a bit, and no problems as usual. These are norcs as well, so no Norc bashing please;).

Time to try out the big fella.
I load it up the using a single round(factory Win. 308) from the mag. No problems, and feeds well.

I take the safety off, aim, and pull the trigger.....nothing...
count to 60 nothing, so open the action and inspect the round. No indent on the primer at all.

So this being the first time I was going to fire this, I figure maybe the hammer didn't actually drop?? I take a couple of dry fires - I can see the hammer drop.

Load another single round from the mag and try it again...same thing...

At this point I'm kind of freaked out, so pack it up.

I cleaned the bolt a few weeks ago, and the firing pin seemed to be floating fine. I'm going to open it up again later on to make sure that is the case. this is also the same stock that the rifle came with.

I'm going to do some reading up on this, but wanted to put this out there, and get some expertise advice:)

Also, next time I take it out, I was thinking about hand loading a primer in an empty case. Figured I could take a closer look this way - and not be freaked out as easily. Good idea/Bad Idea? Recommendations?

Thanks,
Jody.

When you loaded from the the mag, did you pull the op-rod back and let it fly forward? Mine didn't load properly on the first round I loaded because I eased the op-rod forward but not fast enough. My friend pointed out the fact that you just pull it back all the way and then let it go. Now I'm hooked ! :dancingbanana:

bolt isn't closing

Yea the bolt isn't closing.....

I was able to get it down on the work bench and take a closer look. Still don't know what the problem is though..

Again, sorry, I'm a noob with these.

I'm not sure if the cartridge just isn't seating, or there is something wrong with the bolt.

I put a spent case in...and it didn't look right too me..thought maybe it had expanded, and I didn't want to force it in...

so, again, not knowing what it should be like, I put a live round in(the bolt is already removed at this point).

same thing - again not wanting to force anything, and figured I would find out for sure here.

So, now I'm thinking if they should be out this far, maybe the bolt is supposed to wrap around it??? So I take a closer look at the bolt.

highlighted parts do not move. I don't have a bolt disassembly tool to take the bolt apart so I have never really looked into how those parts should work.

The question is.
-should the case seat farther in? If that is the case, then maybe just some more pressure is required. I didn't really let the op rode fly. I didn't ease it in, but also guided it a bit at the start, then let it go.

-or should the bolt hug the protruding part of the case - if that is how it works, then I'll dunk the entire bolt is some gas?? for a bit to make sure there is no cosmo deep inside.

and thanks for the reply's guys...much appreciated.

Jody.

Take a fired case, and hook it under the extractor.
Pivot it against the boltface. Does the ejector move inwards?

nope... nothing moves on the bolt except the firing pin.

I'll soak it in some gasoline. Must just be some cosmoline "gunking" it up, and causing it to stick.

Thanks again.

Jody.

Your bolt and reciever looks very clean and dry. Where's the grease?

How are you releasing the bolt to feed a round to the chamber? Are you letting it fly or are babying it in?

ton45-II, I put the Hoppe's 9 to it, but nothing else. I don't know if there is some cosmo inside that might be causing them to stick.

I pulled the bolt bolt out and tried to manually move the extractor, and the pin? under the firing pin. I just tried to move them with a nail punch, but they wouldn't move..

I'll soak them, and hopefully that will loosen them up??

Should they move freely?

The firing pin is easy to move back and forth. The rest are under pressure. Don't bother trying to remove all the bolt parts (IE don't disassemble the bolt). Got any aerosol Brake Kleener ? Or can you dunk the bolt in Varsol ? Compressed air to follow in order to blow out any factory grease ?

Get back to us!

Cheers,
Barney

if you shake the bolt back and forth the firing pin should be wigglin around .... the other parts, as hungry said are under tension. if your firing pin doesn't freely wiggle back n forth.... somthin is preventing it from doing so.

if yer bolt isn't closing all the way ....... hmmmmmm

[Shameless Plug]You don't have a location on your profile but if you are in the GVRD you should bring your rifle to the Support Group next Saturday. [/Shameless Plug]
