M14/305 laminated birch stock

45ACPKING,

Is your stock made from solid fibreglass, or is it a layup with some kind of filler?

I just spoke with them about the stock they offer 3 different options... machine inletted, hand fitted to our shop gun or completely finished

45ACPKING I dont know about you or the other guys but I am not a fan of "plastic" almost every gun I have has a high quality custom wood stock on it... in principle your fiberglass stock is the same as the laminate but for some reason I just like the wood better... I am talking with them to see if they will make me a custom colour like orange, red or something cool like black laminate, since I already have two guns with natural colour laminate, and one with green.

Another thing is... yes its alot better to buy a canadian made stock but there are very few people making them here in canada... your stock would have to be between a cheap crappy norinco mystery wood at $50 to a JAE-100 which runs about $1100 by the time it gets here or if its still possible to get one out of the country anymore. Some people will tell you they wont spend more on modifications then what the gun cost... oops I blew that principle when I put a leupold scope on mine lol

Now if your stock had an adjustable butt plate and adjustable cheekpiece then I would think twice about getting the wood one.

the stock is 90% , resin injected solid fiberglass, with the use of some epoxy fillers where needed.
there are those in canada with stock duplicators that are heeding the call. Don't be surprised to see canadian carved M1A stocks availlable here in canada in the near future. I am not suggesting i am taking up this endeavor, I am getting "one" stock duplicated for myself.
When i first fell in love so to speak with the m14, the rifle i saw that day was a full NM rig, SS DMR barrel, fat boy brown/light laminate stock......... was a thing of beauty. So yes, I appreciate a fine crafted wood stock over all others as well. I am carving up my own custom stock for a sporterized enfield...... been a few months chippin away at that..... but for future custom wood stocks..... I stick with fiberglass and let the wood carvin proffessionals make the other stocks :D

id say 200 bucks would be a great price, but i dont think more would be unrealistic given the work that would go into small batches of them

i couldnt decide which one i liked better, ill probably sell the other one later

oh fricken my ........ i'm gonna bet yer not gonna sell that top one :D , that is one awesome looking stock my friend.

I was just curious how many people applied for permits to ship there stocks because they are required... I am not complaining I will order one if they send it.

Notice the height of the cheek pad on the Wenig stock. It's at least 1/2" higher than reciever to stock mating surface. Yours is about flush. For myself , I need about 5/8" to get a good cheek weld, with my scope mounted as low as possible. If doing a custom stock keep the comb high as it could be cut down. For full accuracy potential a stiff stock would seem to be a real necessity. There seems to be no shortage of glass or metal stocks in the $600 to $1000 range if you're patient. Nork stocks are normally too soft. USGI need a saddle to raise cheekpiece, and USGI plastic is to flexible up front .Boyds don't seem to be available in any quantity, and would need a riser. Back to Wenig and 45ACPKING design.Obviously there is a gap between $200 USGI and $400 Wenig . I would feel comfotable buying a canadian laminate stock of good quality, but would'nt want to pay more.

The stock from Wenig is for the M1A, and makes no mention of the M14... So, from what I understand, they are allowed to be exported... It is the stocks listed as "for the M14" that have restrictions...

So, that begs the question, because the stocks Fixit ordered say; "Boyds 400-111 M1A / M14 Finished Stock Set TYPE 2"... I have to wonder if it is allowed to be exported OR if the business "knows" the rules and simply puts "M1A" on the ones going out of the country???

They are nice looking stocks Fixit, good find!

Cheers
Jay

thats a good question regarding the m1a/m14 stamp and shipping, ill let you know if i get them.

they said 7 days shipping, priority something or another-USPS

I was going to order 2 of each, but they said if they ship more than 2 at a time customs usually holds onto them forever and delays them for some reason?!

and yes im kind of thinking of keeping the pepper (darker)laminate stock, just because i allready have a lighter colored lam stock on the 10/22. its nice to have some variety...

If anyone else wants them id say order it now so you get them intime for the jan 18 m14 clinic!

or ill have one for sale there....

If they put M1A on it, you should have no problems! In fact, I would have told them exactly that... Good call on using USPS, your going to avoid the ridiculus brokerage fees charged by the couriers...

P.S. Fixit, you'll have to post a review of your Boyd's pepper laminate, how much work to it was to fit etc etc etc...

I just spoke with them about the stock they offer 3 different options... machine inletted, hand fitted to our shop gun or completely finished

After seeing your post msg.drew, I called Wenig again and asked about the cost of having them refinish my stock so that when it arrives it is COMPLETELY ready to drop barrelled action and trigger group in...

Here is the response via email...

The cost to sand and apply our standard finish to the M1 A Scope stock you have on order with us will be $175.00 additional. Please let us know how you would like to proceed.

Thank you,
Karen,Wenig Custom Gunstocks, LLC

OMG! That would make my stock $405 + $175 US DOLLARS, PLUS shipping.

I'm starting to think Fixit found the better deal, and am even mulling over the idea of canceling my order... I will keep you guys in the loop...

Cheers
Jay

The cost they quoted me for my choice of colour laminate completely finished was $575 usd...

I think I will try and finish it myself...

Regardless if they put M1a stock m14 ... they all require permits as they are parts of a firearm... at least thats what numerous companies have told me... many like the JAE-100 are not being issued export perimits to get them out of the USA...

my 400.00 cnd fiberglass stocks are startin to look pretty good from where I sit. :D but i do agree, nothing beats the right piece of fine crafted, hand finished wood on a rifle like the m14 and I'd pay 400 + for the right stock in a heart beat...... geez have you seen the price of the troy mcs aluminum...... arrives friday. :dancingbanana:

I ordered the Nutmeg colored one from DMfirearms for $110USD. Had it shipped to my addy in the states as they charge $42 handling fee to ship to Canada! I'll pick it up next weekend.

Wenig order CANCELLED!!! No problems on their end as my order had only been in with them for 2 working days, they weren't in on Thursday or Friday. I just couldn't justify the $575 US plus shipping cost when something simular (needing minor fitting) from DMFirearms was so much cheaper. I know it's not the same stock, but I can live with it.

Fixit's "hot find" for $110 ($148 US shipped) at DMFirearms is an awesome deal IMHO. Should also say that they don't have that many left in stock... My Boyd's Pepper Laminate stock will be in the mail to me tomorrow, via USPS.

Cheers
Jay
P.S. Sorry to disappoint you guys that were looking for a review of the Wenig product...

Now, I have to find a how-to for bedding a stock...! Like how difficult can it be???

Hungry here: Bring your gear to the Ottawa 21 March 2009 clinic and I'll do it WITH YOU! IT's really easy!!

I got the boyds pepper lam stock, glass beded it at the very first M14 clinique with Hungry on the west coast. Finished it in true oil, two or three coats. It's a thing of beauty, that's probably why I never use it, I'm scared to scratch it. I'll bring it out to the west coast M14 clinique on the 18th, along with some other m14 goodies.
