M14/305

Im using remington 180gr ammo
Try different ammo before anything else.
I'm going to guess you're having trouble with the Norc ammo?
None of mine cycle reliably with it without the odd short stroke(ejects empty case but won't pick up another round). Works perfect with all others.
It did help when I changed the spring guide but try different ammo before you stress out over it.

Always treat an empty "click" like a live round though. Wait a minute with it pointed safely before you check the chamber for a round.

Bullet weights above 168 grains are not recommended for M14s without modifications to the gas ports. You may risk Op. Rod breakage. Don't know if this is related to your cycling issues. Try different ammo as suggested.

How smoothly does the bolt ride forward when stripping the first round?

That 180 gr should only be used with the gas port valve shut off. It's too hard on the gas system to let it cycle normally. A few rounds is fine but don't make a habit of it.
I suppose it could be hammering the bolt back so hard it bounces back before a round can lift enough to be grabbed.
Try some regular 150 gr or similar ammo and if that doesn't work it's time to check the gas port alignment.
I forget what size allen key should pass through into the barrel but it should be in the stickies somewhere.
You aren't using a recoil buffer on the spring guide are you? Take it out if you have one in there.

We still don't know if he actually shot the rifle when he experienced these stoppages. Until he explains further there is not point in giving advice.
