M14 470mm (18.5") barrel job!

Thanks Barney, your doing wonders for my rehab. I'm on to getting a 3rd
M305 and you guys aren't helping. I was actually content and out of the gun circle for about 5 yrs, then 6 months ago I started reading CGN posts....I've bought 6 rifles since then....and no end in sight.
I think I'm going to get the Vortex also. Thanks guys!:)

Any suggestions who to send my Norc to for the 18.5" chop? I was thinking .smithtac.com/Customgunsmithing.html

Wow, what a great addiction ! Just when you thought that shooting a Norinco M14 was fun... it's so much more fun to work / tweak them over.

Cheers and enjoy the addiction,
Barney

Definately deal with Valley Gun Smith (Smithtac), Jeff at VGS does excellent work and usually a quick turn around time !!!

I opted for a Phantom style FH and they can provide a Vortex if you havent got one already. Jeff also test fires and tests everything and will contact the CFC regarding re-verification is required. My registration certificate was marked barrell length of 470mm or greater .. so no re-verification was required.

THey also had metric navy sights as well. Good luck, its an excellent little project.

I'll be contacting Smithtac sometime this week and work out the details for doing the 18.5" chop and those upgrades mentioned. I think I'll mount it in the DaveGP stock that's in the mail. Thanks.

My only regret is that I sold this project rifle.

Its a year later and Im looking forward to building another one !!!! C'mon Marstar get the M305"s already ....

Mine's heading to Jeff as well, thanks for posting this Sahzam - to get me off my fat ass and to the post office with my rifle! :D

Buds you won't be disappointed, Jeff's work is "top notch" he just completed a SAGE M305 18.5 barrel conversion for me. Cheers

OK ... had to sell my last shorty during the last trans-Canada move :( Regret that, but I have a spare M14S that is aching to be shortened.

Ive seen the SMITHS direct connect muzzle breaks and they look GREAT. Has anyone reduced their M305 to 470mm using the standard M14 type flashider? Pictures would be really helpful...

Ill be getting rid of the R33 cheekpeice and slimming down this rifle and go OD matte Green furniture ... will also rig that up with this sling from Specter ....

Cutting the barrel down and then trying to go to the USGI Type FH would be a big hassle.

You need to machine the splines/grooves for the FH and the required shoulder on the barrel for a proper fit.

Just thread the barrel to fit the Smith Vortex or an enlarged AR FH...........this is the easiest solution........

Does anyone have a good pic of the Vortex from SmithTach on a M305 shorty? Like in the first pics?????

Thanks

Hans

Barrel cut to 18.75" and threaded to fit a Smith DC Vortex FH.....

Its amazing how history repeats itself. I seem to be stockpiling M14 parts .. and found my old stash of Norinco .308 ammo ...

.. A new 475mm will be built shortly ;)
