When I recieved my CFC paperwork for the Norinco M14S the barrel length was marked as "470mm or greater" ... This was clearly a sign. I had sent my barrelled upper to ValleyGuns in Petawawa for a barrell trim and touch up ;)

Kind of a Christmas Gift to self :)

Kudos for Jeff at VGS for his excellent work and Lighning-fast-turn aroud time. I honestly didnt expect my rifle back till after the Christmas rush but it literally was shipped out on Friday and back to me by Tuesday !!!!
The barrel was reduced to a legal 470mm and then threaded for a Custom Phantom style flashider along with a shimmed Navy front sight.

Upon re-assembly with a syth USGI stock and Springfield SOCOM scope mount I was immediately impressed with the overall length and handi-ness of the carbine... What a difference!!! Range report coming up shortly.

Thanks guys for all your help. CGN was pretty much responsible for most of the R33 parts, stocks, sights etc.

mount is Springfield SOCOM manufacture. They sell them on their website. You can also try the EE forum.


VGS is s great outfit. I was reffered to them here on CGN. They had all the parts in stock which made a real difference, apparently this is a popular modification.
 
If you don't mind me asking, what should one budget for such a modification? I wouldn't mind 'carbinizing' my M305. :)

Jeff at VGS was very helpful. The Phantom flashider is actually a 5.56 hider that was re-bored to .30 cal. This was due to the thin barrel profile of the M14. The work was about $75, and I shipped the barrelled upper and trigger group (for test firing) cost obn shipping was about $10 (within ON) via Canada Post.

As far as flashiders the sky is the limit. I was offered both the Vortex and the Phantom. All are in stock. I provided my own Navy sight (SKBY). But if you dont have one than VGS stocks these as well.

That was the Springfield mount I used, No special tools and clamps directly onto the barrel. You need the Springfield handguard for the cut outs. Not sure of other local suppliers?

The whole job was about $200, and well worth it given the cheapy cheap Norinco M14s we get in Canada.
 
I haven't had any reliability issues with mine since getting it chopped. Come to think of it I've only had one stoppage with my rifle and that was because the round got hung up in the mag some how. A simple "tap & rack" and I was back in bussiness.

Anymore feedback on your 18.5" M305's? I want to send my M305 in for the same treatment - anything you guys would want done differently? How do you like the Phantom fh? I'm still trying to decide what to stick on my barrel.

My 18.5" M14 with a Smith D.C. Vortex rocks!!!!!:D

A little more bark and a little more muzzle flash.With the Vortex there is really no muzzle rise.

With iron sights (I bored out my rear aperture to 1/8" diameter) I can string 5 out of 5 rounds on a 10" X 10" steel plate off-hand rather quickly.;)

The Rifle is handier and would work well for a close range rifle 50 to 300 yards.

Wow, what a great addiction ! Just when you thought that shooting a Norinco M14 was fun... it's so much more fun to work / tweak them over.
