M14 a good choice for 1st gun?

Well I'm getting the M14, it's already ordered, but I'm not sure about which .22lr yet. The stainless 10/22 with laminate stock is appealing, but I also am very enamored with the Savage BTVS...semi auto vs. bolt, plinker vs. accuracy(and better looks for the BTVS imho), but I'd also have to buy a scope for the Savage, whereas the 10/22 I'd likely run with just iron sights(at least for awhile). I'd probably save in the neighborhood of $150-250 going with the 10/22 and no scope, which could buy a nice pile of .22lr ammo to start. Still lots of time to make up my mind.
 
Agreed, the Savage is a slick bolt action. I'm just thrilled with all the crap i can buy for my ruger. Good luck to you, i'm sure you'll be happy with either, and no doubt you'll be happy with the M14.
