M14 accessories source?

A family friend is going to be in hospital for a month and my wife and I think that he's going to need something to look forward to when he gets out. He's always wanted an M14 and what better time to have one for him than when he comes home!
I can take a nice glossy photo of his new toy to him, but some reading material might also be in order. It will help pass away the time.
I'm a total noob when it comes to this rifle, so, what companies make accessories? I want to contact them and get catalogues etc..and if anyone can recommend some history type literature that would also be a big help.

The EE right here for parts. There is also (USA) http://www.brownells.com/, literature wise there are of course the stickies in this section, the hundreds of threads, and this book is a must IMHO http://www.chestnutridge.com/images/inv/14AB01.asp. As for Canadian companies check the sponsors at the top of the page like Wolverine. Last but not least, be real sure of the laws as to what you can/cannot import so read the stickies in the "legalese" section. There is also an American forum dedicated mostly to the M14; http://www.m-14forum.com/upload/ and another yank M14 site; http://www.imageseek.com/m1a/

There are alot of good bools out there on the market now als.
The complete M14 assebly guide by Walt Kuleck is among one of the best .
The m14 history and developement by Lee Emerson is very good as well and and you can download a copy and print it out for your personal use for FREE !
Lee is currently working on the latest addition .
M1 garand to the M21 by Blake Stevens.

You can get some parts in Canada as along as under $100 and as long as it is NOT USGI M14 parts. Alot of M1 garand parts will interchange with the M14 also , so if you need a rear site you should be able to bring in a USGI M1 garand site, hammer, safety , all of the trigger group internals interchange with the exception of the housing and the trigger gaurd,the extractor and extractor spring and detent from the USA without any problems . You should slo be able to bring in any commercial products like Sadlak,SAinc, Smith, etc. providing they will ship for you ,if not get a freind in the states to purchase and then mail them to you . Some companies just do not want the hassle of the export paper work ,while others have no problem with it .

While Walt Kuleck's book is not too bad, it is not much more than a dis-assembly/assembly guide. The best technical book hands-down is Jerry Kuhnhausen's "The US .30 Caliber Gas Operated Service Rifles. A shop Manual Volume 1 & 2"

Be very wary of any US sources that can't find enough bad words to use about the Chinese M14s. Their opinions are firmly rooted in pro-American chauvanism and a poor quality sample of Chinese rifles. Luckily for Canadians, the US border closed before any of the much better quality Chinese rifles could be delivered and change their opinons. All the easily fixed problems have been corrected; engineering differences such as threads and other incompatibilities cannot be corrected. Speaking on behalf of the tens of thousands of Chinese M14 owners, buy a Chinese M14 as soon as they hit the streets and enjoy.

I totally agree with Maple leaf !
I have 4 of them all Polytechs and I wish I could get my hands on some of the new Norinco's that you have up there North of the Border . Jerry K' book is very good , but it does not cover much about the Chinese rifles ,which Kulecks book completely disassembles and rebuilds a Chinese rifle and covers every aspect in detail with pictures .

FYI, Sadlak does not ship to Canada, period. I called them last Friday.
