M14 accuracy ????

I have a bolt but is the r25 alot better in accurcy

1. Unless im mistaken, the R25 is still an AR and will be restricted.
2. For that price you can build up a polytech with GI bolt and have money left over.
3. More accurate? put against a properly built M14 the deciding factor in accuracy between the two will be the man pulling the trigger.

Well I was able to make a ragged hole at 50 yards with open sights, getting used to the gun still but very pleased with it.

I get too trigger happy to shoot accurately with my M14. It gets to the point where I just wanna put holes in stuff!!!

That said, I have a USGI stock, Marstar guide rod and have never really bothered to sight it in really well.

I shot a deer with it, standing, freehand @ 77yds last year though... does that count for anything?

Where the hell is Hungry? all of our dicks are gonna fall off if he doesn't post soon....

It's very tough to get an objective read on this because you are hearing about accuracy from different shooters using different rifles with different ammo and sighting systems. It would be great to see some objective test data on out of the box accuracy from a machine rest using specific ammo at a certain range-like military acceptance standards.

I used to shoot a very accurate stock HRA M14 in as -issue condition before the bureaucrats intervened with their no ATT decision and relegated these fine rifles to the safe some years ago. I checked my range log on it and found that the average size of 57 groups, using my best handloads at 100 yds off the bench was 1.66". Average group size using UK RG ball ammo was 2.39" while IVI ball averaged just under 3". Just before the no ATT axe fell I got a quantity of the old DA64 ball that shot so well back in the FN days. I really regret that I was'nt able to shoot it in this rifle. This rifle was so accurate with handloads that I was tempted to scope it to get better target resolution. But what the hey,I already had a heavy barrel M700 .308 that shoots .5-.6" groups and a M70 Win Featherweight .308 that shoots .76" groups,so my quest for .308/7.62 accuracy was pretty much fulfilled.

Since losing the possibility of shooting the M14 I've consoled myself by building 2 Garands in 7.62 which shoot very well. Just for fun I might just buy one of the Norincos and see what it does in stock condition in relation to the Garand and the real M14. Seems I won't have any difficulty selling it afterwards.

Just looked over my shooting log for both of my 14's and I found that with Fedaral 150g I continually shoot 2 inch groups. With hand load 165g Hornady sst's with 39 grains of imr 4895 my groups shrink down to just over 1 inch. Although I do let my barrel cool after each group, of 3 rounds. Heat is your enemy in your barrel. I have sold one of my 14's and the guy who sought it has yet to shoot it so who knows how well he shoots it. It depends on alot of variables when accuracy is required. Hot day cold day and all that good stuff. If you hungrify your 14 expect tighter groups.

Just my 2 pennies but then again what do I know?

I'm here Wally.... :D

I'm still recovering from the past 48 hours. I'm going to attempt to be very vague / obtuse about where I was and what I saw, but on Thurs evening after teaching all day and then doing my school bus supervision duty, I drove the 470 kliks to Ottawa, stayed overnight at a secret CGN Moderator's spare bedroom and reported to the (secret) shop at our National Police HQ in Orleans. I spent the day bringing the armorers up to speed on the M14 platform and they showed me THEIR  groups...

These skilled master craftsmen were shooting groups around the 1/2" to 3/4" mark . (inside their windproof shooting tunnel / facillity)

I cannot say anymore except that I left their HQ at 1500 hrs , got caught in the 417 Queersway traffic and finally rolled back into Collingwood for 2130 hrs. I never slept better. My head was spinning all day Saturday from the information overload after this most secret (ever) M14 clinic. :D

Many of you have attended my clinics in the past and all I can say is that I am not used to showing the M14 tweaks to craftsmen who will forget more than I will ever know about tweaking boomsticks. They are true masters! Not me... I'm just a friggin' hack!

And yes, you can get the box stock Norinco M14's to shoot under an inch with 5 rd groups regularly, after tweaking, match ammo, and I must say these M14's they had were not glass bedded... they were in (yup, all of them) their factory toxic waste, PCB laden, H1N2 contaminated, WHMIS nightmare, MSDS sheet missing, Chu wood stocks! I was truly amazed when they EACH showed me their groups in carefully recorded/cut out and pasted targets found in their binders.... I cannot say anymore, or else my #### will fall off! :)

I'm ready for a nap... Ah yes, no M14 clinic in November.... YET... I can unpack my rolling tool kit/ Duffel bag. You Halifax clinic dudes remember that one.... ;)

Barney

I shot a deer with it, standing, freehand @ 77yds last year though... does that count for anything?

That absolutely counts!!:) That is an example of practical accuracy. Sure you could have, in theory, shot him in the eyeball with your heavy barrel $4000 sniper rifle, if you had humped your benchrest and your sandbag along through the woods with you, but that is not practical now is it.

My point is, how accurate does a semi auto battle rifle have to be anyway???
IMHO 2-3 inch groups is more than good enough to hit what you're aiming at out to 500yds.

You are right regarding the accuracy for hunting and a semi-auto boomstick.

Many of us M14 lovers love to tinker and that's the beauty of the M14 lore... they are fun to work on!

I leave in 3 hours for 21 days of hunting B.C. Moose and mule deer. My main rifle I will be packing is a shorty m14 , wearing my M14SA2 hunter stock. Ammo will be 165gr federal fusion. I'll report back on success and how the rifle performed. I won't hesitate to drop a pill on a game animal at 300 yards with this rifle..... she's a shooter :D

sounds like you had a blast Hungry. It's cool hangin with LEO's and showing them some tricks, been there a few times hehehe.
By the way, when are you gonna let us west coasters put you up for a weekend and have you out to one of our clinics?

I'lll be resuming the west coast m14 support group free clinics starting in December with an "Alumni" party at the new digs.

what are the chances of seeing an M14 clinic out in Winnipeg??? I jut got my black synth. polytech yesterday and am anxious to shoot it, and then start some tweaks, but I dont know much about this rifle. Even from reading other posts I am a bit dazzled by all the info and would love to have someone show me around this rifle.

Hungry here: ha ha ha Fire and Rauch Tactical hosted one back in April 06, 2009 this year. It was fun! Let's see if we can pull one off for the Spring, but no promises. I'm doing Barrie, ON for Jan, Burlington for Feb, Ottawa for March and Calgary for June.....
