M14 as first rifle?

I know they arnt as precise as a 10/22 but they seem more fun to shoot with the recoil and sound... Seems more like shooting a rifle compared to a .22 that sounds like your shooting pellets lol (thats just me though, nothing personal.) Plus i really love old rifles from the WW2 era.

I want to have fun with my first rifle (safe fun that is.) When i get better and more use to shooting i'll move up to something more serious (like an M14.)

I was thinking about it today and im still considering the SKS a bit more... a .22 rifle seems too much like a kids gun to me to be honnest. *puts on flame suit* It probably isint the case, specially seeing how much of you guys like them, but a 7.62 sounds more fun to me. But then, i couldnt know since i never shot either of them. I guess i'll have to find someone to let me squeeze a few rounds this spring :)

I'm going to completely disregard that .22 comment and say, you've got the right idea. I liked the sks until I shot it.... then I bought an 858. The sks is starting to grow on me now I know how to shoot (barely:p)

If you've got decent cash flow you'll be ok, but some days it's nice just to shoot for an afternoon and spend less than the price of a slurpee on ammo, hence the .22 .

But yah, definitely go out and try out as many guns as you can before you commit to dropping $100-$500 on a gun you may actually dislike.

Ya im sorry if my comment about .22's offended anyone, its just how i see it personally... But dont mind me, im really just a noob that doesnt know what his talking about lol.

It's always good to see family getting involved. The first rifle my sister in law ever shot was an AR of mine. It completely changed her opinion on firearms. She did not pick up the hobby but she certainly understood how others could enjoy it. She did quite well shooting dime sized groups at 25 yards and moving out to 100.

The AR is a cool gun but it is restricted and expensive making it not the best first choice. You have to be prepared to be in a club and go only to certified facilities.
You should have a proper vault/safe to store it in.
