M14 Bolt assembly, what a PITA

I just took my M305 to the smith this morning to check the headspace of the new bolt I installed. He took apart my bolt to check the headspace I told him I had a hell of a time putting that back together. I told him I did it the 30-06 casing method. He told me that’s the stupid method. He assembled that bolt in about 3 minuets. He put it in a bench vice, compressed the plunger and ran a punch through the extractor hole. With the extractor detent compressed, he pushed the extractor in and as he was pushing it in, the punch was coming out. Simple. He had it done in 3 minuets.

Isn't that what the combination tool, that comes with the gun, is for ?

I use the tool,works on the Garand and M1A bolts,takes about 30 seconds.Sorry,does not come with the gun,but available as an option.

Using the proper bolt assembly/disassembly tool saves a lot of storm and strife with an M1 Garand or M14. Ditto for the M1 Carbine.

Very clever !

You can do the same thing with a 4" or larger bench vise using a chopped 308 case. Just cut the case about 1/2" above the extractor groove and use the head part between the bolt face and the vise jaw. The only drawback from the lathe method is that you can't rotate the bolt. Just make sure it's facing in the right direction.

Don't sell it just because of this ...get some new springs and if you ship it to me I will assemble it as I have a bolt tool.
I live in Ontario though. Is the barrel indexed correctly ..is you op rod guide nice and tight ?
If you need it I can fix those issues as well just ship me the rifle and I will sort it out .
Just pay the favour forward somehow.

What we like about our bolt tool is that it helps not only with disassembly, but also with re-assembly of the bolt.

It's the closest thing to having three hands and steel fingers required to perform the required task, lol.

Cannot recommend that thing enough. And MagWedge shipped it out fast, great service.

Only downside is I waited until I launched a cork soaking ejector somewhere into the basement before caving and buying the tool lol

I've done it without it in the past, but it's a pain and you can never have too many tools

Tony Ben is a fantastic M14/M1A resource. This is EXACTLY the research Kaskirov should have done before embarking on his project. A GI multi-tool will work, but nothing beats Tony Ben's .30-06 spent case method.
