M14 Bolt Disassembly/Assembly

So I've had an M14 for a few years now and would like to start taking apart the bolt for its twice a year thorough clean. Problem, I've never done it before and I do not have a bolt tool for the job. I know you can take it apart and put it together with the GI tool, but is this practical?

I also know that M14 Doctor sells an AMAZING tool for $89.99, but was wondering if I could save some $ and go with the one at Brownells?

Or should I just man up and attempt it with the GI Tool and be done with it?

Any suggestions are appreciated. I would hate to get the bolt apart and then have absolutely no idea how to put the darn thing together again.
 
I've got both tools, whenever you happen to visit me up here west of Barrie, I could show you. Or you could use your combination tool that came in you buttstock. Like that M10 tool in the link above... do this under a large, white (you will thank me) beach towel inside a plugged bathtub! Nothing gets lost that way....

Better yet use aerosol brake cleaner... a couple of blasts and you are now clean for a long time! :D

Or bring it to a clinic I am going to and sucker me into doing it for you like I did at the last one for a couple guys while Barney laughed at me. Ditto for trigger groups.

Even when you are good at this, it always looks awkward to observers.
 
I just took mine apart for the first time had to trim the springs. I found links on using a 30-06 case worked slick for the dissassemble re assessmble was another story it's not to bad but you need a third hand. It took me awhile and having my ejector go flying a few times. But now that I've done it once if I had to do it again wouldn't be to bad. If I was going to be doing this often I would definatly by the m14 doctor tool as I only plan on doing this to make repairs or replace parts I am to cheap I'll use brake cleaner to clean it once and awhile.
 
Nah, if you've ever had to service a 4 barrel Rochester or that damn variable venturi (Ford) carbs, you'd figure out quite quickly that you have to multi task with the fingers.

I sprayed, and disassembled mine (used an old piece of canvas and 30'06 casing) several times without a hitch. Pretty basic really.
 
LOL I used to have a ford with variable venturi carbs and had to take it apart a few times, never thought to make the comparison. I agree it wasn't as bad as I expected managed it without a third hand would of been easy with one.
