Is there some sort of trick to holding the extractor spring in place while pushing the extractor back in?

I'm using the STROBEL bolt tool and had no problem disassembling the bolt but I'm having one hell of a time getting the extractor into place because of the spring.

Tips anyone?

Ejector or extractor?

I needed to compress it a bit with my fingers while pushing the extractor enough to block it, then snapping it into the final position by pushing it with a slender slotted screwdriver blade. You can't fully do it all in one step. Kinda far enough to hold it, then further into the hole in the extractor.

I'm using the same tool. The first time it might take 5 minutes, but
you need to do it once. Then, you'll be assembling/diassembling bolts
in seconds.

Ejector:
Put the bolt with the ejector, ejector spring and the firing pin in the tool.
Fasten the screw slowly as the ejector spring is long and needs to be
compressed in small increments.

Extractor:
The extractor is easier to put in. Once you have ejector and bolt in the tool,
put the extractor and extactor spring, but don't force it, gently press
extractor and push the extractor spring into place with a screwdriver at
the same time as you push the extractor in.

easiest way by far is demo'd on hungry's video. All you need is an empty 30 06 case and your hammer. If you have the video, I recomment you watch it. Its the one in his basement.

Put the rifle together, minus the bolt internalls,

Put empty case into chamber.
Put ejector & spring into bolt and let bolt slowly go forward onto empty case.
Put extractor & spring into bolt and use hammer to knock it in.

###XX If you're using the norc bolt, cut 2 coils off of the extractor spring because its slightly longer than a USGI and its impossible to get in.

hope that helps.
