Hey guys,

I just ordered a Rooster33 bolt release. Do any of you have instructions as to how you installed yours on your norc? I know with the wealth of knowledge on the board that I will immediately have instructions from someone as to how to install it. I am assuming that you just punch out the pin holding the old one in and install a new pin for the new release. If it is more involved than this let me know.

Regards.

I am installing a bolt release on my Nork M14 an found the hole for the split pin smaller in the R33 than the Nork. The wall is too thin to redrill and I am trying to figure out my next step. Any hints???

I am sure Skullboy will chime in here shortly with the answer.;)

Take the pin and chuck it up in a drill/drillpress (I happen to have a drillpress so....).Use a file or Emery cloth to take down the diameter of the pin.You will have to stop and switch ends a few times until you get a fit.

The pin fits snug in my Rooster33 latch, but moves freely in the reciever.

Use caution when removing & installing the roll pin in the reciever. You will probably find that your punch will bend/get bent when tapping in the new pin due to the closeness of the holes to the side of the reciever.Just remember that if you screw up the reciever mounts for the pin, you are screwed!!!!!

Use a thin layer of masking tape to prevent the reciever from getting marked if the punch or hammer slips.

HTH.

When I did mine I found the following techniques worked (sorry if these are too basic, it was all new to me):
  • Rifle unloaded & secured (I used my MTM cleaning stand), muzzle to the left and with bright light shining on bolt release area
  • Apply painters tape (blue low tack) to left and right of bolt release to protect stock & receiver
  • Apply painters tape across bolt release (wrapped around receiver & stock) to retain release and spring
  • Using a 5/64" roll pin punch (mine has a thin handle and a 2" long shaft) and a a small brass hammer, drift old pin out from front
  • Remove tape & old release, observe and secure spring
  • Install new release and spring, apply painters tape to hold in place
  • Drift new pin in from rear
  • Remove tape and test

I'm also ordering the Rooster bolt release. Abman where did you find the split pin?

Picked it up from my mechanic buddy next door, it is a standard split pin approximately 1" x 3/32. It fits snug in the rooster and rides free on the M14 mounting block. The chief difference from the nork to this is that the nork's split was larger as if it were spread.
