Maybe someone can help me here..........do I have to remove my 3rd gen Springfield scope mount to get the bolt out of my M14. Trying to clean it after adding scope & zeroing ect......don't want to take off the scope if I don't have to, but doesn't look like bolt will come out otherwise.?????:runaway:

Well the short answer is yes. You can still clean up the bolt face pretty good without taking the bolt out. I use a soft brass brush and ####load of bore cleaner and it comes out nicely. I have a Ho chi Mihn scope mount, while working well and not causing jams, I can't pull out the bolt either. I suspect you would really have to only take out the bolt after maybe 1000 rounds if you're using clean western style ammo. In fact I fired 200 rounds of that winchester white box 147gr. stuff and it looked like it hadn't been fired at all.

Uh, I don't think you have to remove the mount... I have a 3rd gen and believe my bolt comes out with it still mounted... but I haven't shot it in a while and can't remember for sure. I'll check tonight.

you shouldn't have to- i don't but i remove the main operating spring first-
to quote fm23-8- page 9 paragraph d, removal of the bolt
grasp the bolt by the roller and while sliding it forward, lift it upward and outward toward the right front with a slight rotating motion- this is assuming you've followed the conventional stripping method and removed the gas system and op-rod first- it's really stupid as to why they don't put a copy of fm23-8 in with every rifle, or at least they didn't with mine

Here's the answer I recieved from the rifle's previous owner..(thanks tucker05)

Hi Greg,
Yes, you have to remove the scope mount to remove the bolt. The mount will hold zero in most cases BUT you must be very careful to tension the side bolts exactly the same in each remove/ install cycle and be sure to line up the ridges in the mount with the slots in the reciever. Note: the vertical reciever slot does not line up perfectly with the Poly reciever. We removed some material from the mount ridge to allow for this. Do not panic when you see this. The mount does not move and holds zero throughout the course of fire.
I do not recommend you remove the mount/ bolt for everyday cleaning purposes this will cause premature wear of the mount ridges and bolts...this goes for all mounts including ARMS. At most the bolt should only be removed for thourough cleaning (once/year) or due to mechanical problems.
Hope that helps.

Serious match shooters don't even remove the rifle from the stock during the year unless given no other option, as it breaks down the bedding. It's an inconvenience that you are faced with, but not a big problem as most cleaning and lubing can be done with it in place.

When the time comes to remove the bolt, make sure you don't need the rifle in the very near future (don't do it during hunting season), and make sure you have lots of ammo on hand so you can test out the scope for zero and any shifting of poi after you re-install the mount. I'd also schedule any other upgrades for the same time period, such as bedding the stock.

It's an annual excuse for a long range session, that's a good thing. ;)

Guys, With my ARMS 18 in place I can remove and replace the bolt during cleaning. It looks complicated to replace the bolt at first but it isn't any more difficult than usual.

I just did it about 1/2 an hour ago so I know for a fact it works!:)
