Can you get a good cheek weld on a standard wood or usgi stock while using iron sights? Id just kind of like to know what some owners have to say about the overall ''feel'' of the rifle? When mounting and optic with say 42-52 mm objective, what will i need to do to maintain my proper cheekweld. Picture examples are always fun :D

your question makes no sense to me- the m14 is DESIGNED for iron sights, so that would get a good cheek weld right out of the box- it's when you ADD a scope to it that you have to raise your head somehow to accomodate the height of the scope = therefore , you need to attach a cheekplate that raises the comb to get a proper cheekweld-

I'm no expert, but I believe the issue is reserved to glass optics, due to paralax shift, a distortion to the apparent impact point, due to changes in the shooters viewing position. On the m14/m305 the scope is mounted quite high, making a cheek weld imposible, it's more of a chin-weld, and difficult to reproduce exactly the same everytime you shoot, particularily under stress. A riser helps.

Thanks for your help t bag.. Im not really looking to use a large objective lens, probably a 39-42. Is there a mount that is known for having a slightly lower overall height then its competitors? Any fraction of an inch would help

I'm not sure it would help much. My rings are really low, my mount's the same, but it still places the center point on the scope more than an inch higher than the irons. I put a nice Boyd's laminate stock on mine, and it looked so pretty, I couldn't bear the idea of drilling a proper mount for a riser. If I pay attention, muscle memory keeps me printing nice groups at 200m, but if I were fighting for my life, I'd do the Iraq fix: foam and duct tape.

I find even with irons I get a chin weld the stock comb is too low for me, looking to put a riser on it. Get the same with my No. 4 Lee Enfield so I put a monte carlo stock on it, perfect for me with standard irons now. Might just be me eh? ;)

it all depends on HOW MUCH you want to spend on your mount - your arms 18s tend to run a couple of hundred, and the smiths, sadlaks, and others are probably more- this is for steel, which as the same expansion ratio as your receiver, and not ALUMINUM which expands differently- as to the scope itself, i've found that anything bigger than 40mm tends to violate the tunnel-with the bottom of the bell unless you use high rings- then that mandates you need a higher riser- on my q&d folder i have a 32, which has no riser , and allows me to use both the tunnel and the irons as i see fit( excuse the pun) - i also have it in 4-12x. not 3-9
if you look at the picture, you'll see he cannot use his tunnel, and that;s a 40mm objective- i used a couple of pieces of hot water pipe insulation and duct tape to make my riser- each piece will give you about a half -3/4 rise - and it's cheap as heck
oh, btw, the higher you mount your scope, the more it will twist out of your hands- we found this out when we mounted the ans/pv series

hmmm, well i like the idea of having something for a riser but i dont want to drill into my stock either. And i do like to shoot iron sights from time to time so i dont want to be stuck with a riser. I think maybe ill find a removable pad and stuff foam underneath it as needed to get a good feel. Anyone know where to buy on in Canada? Or even know what im talking about?

The best and least expensive route to go is a velcro or lace up cheekpiece from Blackhawk. I have them on my M1A and Norc M14 as well as precision bolt guns and have found them to be excellent. IIRC they run between $50-75.

Pretty much what i was going to say. It's strapped to my slug bbl. with scope, right now and seems to add a bit of height. I have had it on the m14 with irons using USGI stock. that way your not ruining a stock that is difficult to find.

where to find blackhawk cheekpiece?

I'd like to find one, where to find one? Thanks!

here's an old trick we used to use on recruits that didn't position their stock properly- you raise the "flap" - and then push it down into your shoulder with the opposite hand- very similar to the way you position an lmg properly-the "bren gun " position- the m14 is built around the "average" gi which is 5'6"to 6'2" and about a 33 arm, give or take- if that sounds like you, it SHOULD fit-

Fabsports out of Montreal sells this one..part # bk-90CP01BK
