Scope? We dont need no stinkin scope!!!:D
Finally made it out to my mountain test facility to test my USGI Poly rifle built for me by M14 Doctor.

For those awaiting the results of micrometer measured group sizes, guess again. This was the good ol "bucket in the wind" test. It comprises of (wait for it) a shiny metal pail suspended from a 8 foot tripod made from deadfall;). 10 shots are fired at a pail, the pail is then scored and a fresh pail hung from the tripod. It gently sways in the wind, the sun glints off it, its a 3D target and it goes clang when ya hit it. 100% pure fun:D

All shooting was done with GI iron sights from the prone position, no rest, no sling, no shooting aid allowed.
Ammunition used was Winchester 150gr powerpoints and Lake City M118 173gr 1972 vintage.

Sighting in was done at 25 meters shot as stated above. After marching the shots into the center of the little white paper square and getting the front sight set just right, I fired a 3 shot group into the square to confirm she was bang on. The group measured less then 3/4''. So far so good.

I already had a 100m elevation zero for this rifle from a previous plinking session so it was time to move on to the main event.
The pails were shot at 300 meters distance shooting uphill. The best pail of the day was an 8 out of 10. A silhouette target was also blasted at 300 with one 3 shot group measuring 3 inches!! Whooo!! (with M118 of course;) What a rifle!! I'm in love. Thomas, you did one heck of a job!! Many thanks. Next time out, the 400meter bucket test!! (I'm going to sling up for that one haha).

I'll bet your bolt, oprod, barrel and flash suppressor cost you more than most guys have invested in their whole M14 ;)

Sounds liek a cool rig. USGI builds on Poly or Norc receivers are great. I've got one, working on No.2 ;)

I like your Cadpad one Claven 2;). Mine has the shaft lock and connector as well. Mine cost me about $2000 inc all shipping on parts and gunsmithing.

Nice rifle. I notice your front sight is toward the right side of the block like my poly. Does that mean the front sight is slightly canted or barrel not indexed correctly?

trust me..... the barrel is indexed correctly ;)
glad to hear she is shootin fine and that you are having fun with her.
i like the pail hangin on a deadfall tripod...... i'm gonna try that when i'm all moved in up country :D

Thanks:D Barrel is indexed correctly, front sight is straight. Its just where this particular rifle shoots with me behind the trigger. I know the flash supp is on straight as that puppy is standard (not reamed):D

Lets put it this way Doc, if I ever go down to one rifle, this will be the one:D
Thanks again for the fine work and great customer service!

Thanks Doc and J996. My buddies dad looked over my poly and told me that my sight was over to the side because either a crooked front sight or indexing issues. The above pictures look identical to mine so I guess there is nothing to worry about and the front sight doesn't have to be centered like I was told.

No, it could well be off (and probbly IS). Get a gunsmith to check it if it bothers you. Re-indexing is usually painless.

Gotta love that minute-of-pail accuracy! Kinda reminds me of "Quigley down Under" movie with Tom Sellect and his .45-110 cal boomstick.

Great job on the build. I bet you are proud of that M14!! Thanks for the cool range report! :D

Cheers,
Barney

This rifle really likes the old M118 special ball.:D It is 173gr@2550fps and unless I'm on glue it was the round used for the M21 rifle.
The general consensus for max bullet weight on here is usually to stay below 165gr. Can I run a few hundred rounds of this through her as is or do I have to use a grooved piston? Did the M21 use a grooved piston? Does this even matter since this is NATO and loaded milder than commercial?

the grooved piston is specifically for 180 gr and higher according to Sadlak.
and to the best of my knowledge, bullet weights for the m14 design parameters run 147gr to 174gr.
just inspect your oprod arm and tab every 300 rounds or so. take a digi cam pic of those surfaces areas now and you'll have a solid reference pic to evaluate any degredation /peening of the tab or and bending of the oprod arm ;)

no, at the back edge and front edge, where it contacts receiver on end of each stroke.
however, with heavy ammo, you are more or less looking for bending, twisting or cracking of the oprod arm, towards the tube end. a twist or bend in an oherwise straight oprod, will generally begin to show as tab corner peening and intermittent binding ;)
