M14 First Impressions and shoot - update post 92 - Finally Finished!

Sweet! Im also awaiting my mount and scope/rings. What setup are you going with?

Promag ARMS 18 copy. I can choose between Millet, or Warne rings, nothing fancy, but I have them on hand. As far as the scope, I'm having some trouble deciding. I have five to choose from. I don't expect they will last so I'm not sure which one I like the least. I Think the 2-7X32 Bushnell Banner may get the job. If it doesn't last on to the next junk scope that's cluttering up my drawer. It will be nice when I pay off the Burris FF 30 Euro 3-9X40 I have laid away. It's not the ideal scope but it has a lifetime warranty and has an illuminated dot. :D Best part is it's under $300 for a $500 scope.

I used a 3x9 Bushnell Trophy scope (with the BDC reticle) on my M305 and never had a problem with it. It held zero through about 125 rounds. The mount was an inexpensive one from CanadaAmmo.

I have heard good things about the promags and the Bushnell Trophy scopes. I ended up ordering the ARMS 18 with Millet rings and a Burris 3x-9x x 40Fullfield II scope. Hopefully the gun gods shine on me and everything vibes together well. This is my first scoped rifle (outside of a repro PU).

What primer are you using? Just curious.

Currently CCI, I'd also use Winchester. Harder primers are suggested with the floating firing pin. You can see the difference between CCI and Federal. I've had a slam fire, pretty freaky experiance. When you look at the depth of the indent in a spent round with Federal primers it doesn't inspire much confidence.

Unless your going to shoot a match barrel with a tighter chamber I doubt you'll notice any difference between Win and CCI. I'm sure not going to notice.

Good job OP, i have to get mine modified also for better accuracy
this is when i got the rifle zeroed at 50m, norinco ammo and M305 Shorty non modified everything is stock. as you can see the holes start from the top to the middle. last 5 shots are groped in the middle as you can see

Over on the HIGH ROAD forum....they suggested CCI #34 OR BENCH REST CCI. I believe it is CCI BR4.

CCI 200 will be fine, when it starts shooting half inch groups then get the Bench Rest primers. Since it's about primer hardness I think you'd find Winchester Large Rifle primers fine as well. I'll use both, whatever I can get my hands on.

Over the past few days I have been working on scoping the rifle. I decided to go with the ARMS 18 mount, Millet angle loc rings and a 3x-9x Burris Fullfield II. After some initial issues with installing the mount (canted to the left - fixed by removing the C Clamp - Thanks for the input!) I was good to go.

Once I hit the range and began to try and sight the rifle in at 50m it was
aparent that the windage setting on my rings was right out to lunch. Initially I was about 2ft to the right on my point of aim and an inch or so high  Luckily a very generous CGNer was a few firing lines down from me and spent quite a bit of his range time helping me play with the rings/mount to get everything lined up  This saved me TONS of time and "lost rounds" chasing my zero.

After about 15 or so rounds I was roughly at zero with the mount and began fine adjustments with the scope itself. The Fullfield II seems so far like an excellent scope for the money. I have nothing to compare it to other then a C79 Elcan and a repro PU however. The ballistic plex reticle is very sharp and the 1/4 MOA adjustments are very well done.

After playing with the fine adjustments a bit I found I was short rounds so was unforunately only able to shoot a few groups. Here are the results

50m sight in after inital ring windage correction

4 x rounds at either 50 or 100m. Im going to say 50m to be safe :p

3 x rounds at 100m before fine tuning at 100m.

3 x rounds at 100m after fine tuning. These were the last of my rounds of that powder charge (best shooting). I KNEW I pulled the last shot - I could feel it! I even joked with the shooter beside me after seeing the first two rounds touching that I would bugger up the third. I was right! f:P:

All shooting was done on a front AND rear rest. Personally I couldnt hold groups like that :p

And the rifle!

Im still waiting for a stitch up blackhawk cheeck rest and am debating on going with a bi pod. Overall I am extreamly impressed with this rifle. As a note, the electrical tape I have used on the fore end and the upper hand guard has held perfectly in place for about 150 rounds. The rifle is extreamly tight with the only movement being between the rifle and magazine.

Thanks for reading!
