Hey there,
I've been wanting to dress up the Norc M14, and have been looking around for muzzle brakes and/or flash eliminators (other than the standard issue or Smith ones) but having a touch time finding any made for the M14. Anyone out there ever tried making their own or fitting one from another rifle? Which ones and pictures would be appreciated.

I really like my Vortex. You can get them from Valley gunsmithing.(support our dealers). Igot to shoot mine in a low light setting and it worked great. Also there's nearly no muzzle rise.

I've got a Smith on each of my 3 M305's - one each of the Vortex 2000V (on a shortie) and 2002V (on my long range scoped gun, and a muzzle break on the remaining. Very nice and highly recommended.

I second going to Jeff Smith at Valley.

I've seen this photo before.

The only problem I have with it is that the twist is LH (counter clockwise)....this is meant for an AK or variant.

The vortex is specifically to reduce flash and also self tighten during use, they only need to be put on hand tight.

Valley should have installed the regular vortex DC instead of this...and the norc barrel is NOT TOO NARROW.

I've wondered about the effectiveness of flash reduction when the twist is wrong. I also wonder if this messes with the projectile as it's leaving the barrel.

What is Valley charging for Vortex's ??

I too want to find a Vortex for my Norc M14...it's having the barrel shortened now, and SAE threads cut. Does anyone know if Jeff @ Valley sells the ones with standard SAE threads?

Thanks, Jeff/1911.

Yes, since I don't think there are any other kind from Smith. Jeff put one on my shortie.

Sharkson,

Hey, thanks! For some reason I was thinking I had heard that the M14's done by "Smiths" and others were threaded w/ metric threads...which doesn't make a lot of sense now I think about it.

GG&FB,
I really haven't had any problems with my Vortex. I was unaware of the twist rate issue. I had it put on by Lyle at Ultimate Accuracy when he cut my barrel down. As for the accuracy question, I can shoot approx 2" 100yard groups with the Surplus ammo. Those groups would probably shrink a bit with a better scope and some minor upgrading of the inner parts. Next time I have a chance to shoot in low light I'll try to snap a picture for you to see the effectiveness of it.

Those are pics of an Entreprise Arms flash hider, looks like an M16A2 attached to the M14 castle nut portion. It's hard to tell from the pics if it was made that way or if it is the two joined together.

If you look at pictures of the regular Smith Vortex for the M14 it too looks like a regular Vortex attached to a portion of M14 flash hider, why else would it would have the wrench flats?

I've been contemplating doing something similar, but using a .308 Phantom 5C1. I've already picked up a couple of spare Norinco flash hiders, just need to remove them from the barrel stubs. Once I get the Phantom all I need is someone with a lathe to assist me in putting it together.

I've also wondered if it would be possible to chop a section out of a regular flash hider and weld it back together successfully, but that might be tough to do and have it turn out well.

ETA: Those pics are from Different's website. If he'd like me to remove them I will.

I might be looking for a Norc flash hider that has the slots cut out as mine are not cut to meet the AWB (thank you Clinton)

Hey I like the idea of splicing together the sights and another kind of flash suppressor, or even muzzle brake. Not sure of the logistics how effective that'd all be but definitely interesting. Doesn't seem to be a whole lot of options out there otherwise.

I was looking close at those pictures though, and noticed on that short-barreled M14 the barrel was flared a bit and grooved like the standard barrels, for the standard type sight mounts. So what would be some (practical) ideas on shortening the barrel on a norc then (properly) fitting on something like castle nutted sights?

On a cut down barrel it wouldn't be very practical at all, if even possible, since the barrel dia is thinner behind the threads. I picked up a 18.5" G.I. style barrel that uses the "castle nut" system, so for me it is practical, and I like the look, not to mention the extended sight radius.

For a cut down Norc barrel GGFB would be the guy to talk to, he seems to have a ton of experience in these matters. I believe that you can have whatever flash hider you want installed, just make sure that the 'smith threads it appropriately. When a buddy of mine had his done he had the muzzle threaded 1/2 28 TPI so that he could install a standard AR A2 flash hider (after it had been bored out for 7.62).
