Hi guys, this is my 3rd M14 build.
And just test drove it, it's a little different from the others and wondering if something should be retuned.
Out of all 3 M305s, it's the one that rings the loudest when racked or dry fired.
And is the only one, to stay real quiet when actually shot.

M1A NM flash hider, gas shimmed tight, gas lock finger tight 3 o clock and wrench it to 6 o clock
S&J op rod spring guide and spring

Any clues?

My fun is almost as much in tuning them, than shooting them.
I have 2 others that ping loud and is not a necessity for this one.
Still curious as why it is not.

Yeah definately
Even when inserting a mag and slamming bolt shut chambering a round, there is a ringing i can hear even with my ear muffs

You answered your own question as I see it based on my own experience. Your other rifles have parts that are not completely tight and will then not allow the action of the rifle (dry fire, action) to force the harmonic all the way to the flash hider to hear the "ping" of it... but when you fire all the parts move on their own creating the noise. Your third rifle has all of its parts touching square and tight so when the rifle bolt moves it forces all of the harmonic to the flash hider that then acts like a tuning fork... but when you fire it everything works in harmony and you can't hear the "tuning fork" over the "bang" because everything is happening in proper order, as it should.

I have had a few M14/M1a/M305 platform rifles and have only one like your third: only the flash hider "pings" when it is not fired. My opinion based on experience only... your opinion may vary.

I could of specified, the 3x norincos are 2013 production, and all share the same parts, as in all the same USGI parts, and all the same op rod spring guide rod and spring.
This 3rd rifle will most likely get cut at 18.5'', have a front sight gas lock, and a modern flash hider

So the ping isnt essential here, but from i read from replies either this rifles harmonics are off or the ping is actually deafened by the bang.

Was also asking the question, as i'm wondering if the ping varies a lot from flash hider to flash hider.
Now im curious, time to swap FH and pay the range a visit soon!

I believe the quality of metal used in the rifle and the flash hider matters. I found Norinco to "ping" the least, followed by older USGI in the middle and new Springfield and USGI types to "tuning fork" the most. Again, just my observation of more than a few rifles.

I have come to the same conclusion except for one.
There is a norinco FH i might reinstall with USGI sight and nut, it rings like crazy. Just holding it in your hands tight and gently tapping on my wooden desk it starts ringing like crazy.

I also have a similar Norinco FH.
