I am wanting to shoot some Alberta Boars with my m14. I was just wondering if anyone has a good round in mind for knocking down one of these things. I have only ever used mil-surp through this rifle. Has anyone found a reliable hunting round that feeds well through their m14? Something that I can buy locally a decent price would be nice. Thanks!
 
Ive never hunted boar but they look pretty tuff. think ur m14 is the best weapon to use ? sure it will kill it... eventually. but maby something a little bigger will do it with one shot.
 
I've found all the 150 gr hunting rounds I've tried so far, feed just fine through my Norinco M14. I've tried Federal Power Shoks and Vital Shoks, as well as Federal Fusion. I used the plastic tipped Vital Shoks on a deer and it worked fine. They also had good accuracy, but the plain lead nose Federals had the best accuracy. Too expensive to shoot a lot of test shots with (the plastic tipped). I'm not an experienced with boar though, and I'm not sure whether you'd want to favor penetration or fast expanding.

Edit: The Fed Premiums are Vital Shoks with Nosler Ballistic tips. Around $40 a box. The plain Feds are around $17.00 a box and the Fusions around $23.00 last time I bought some.

Ya, they are tuff creatures I am sure; but never shot one before either. $40 a box is a bit too pricey but I may run a box of the plain feds and Fusions Grizzlypeg mentioned and see what produces the best accuracy. Is .308/7.62 not enough bang to knock one down? I would have thought it to be sufficient. I suppose I could use my shottie, but the m14 would be more fun.

Does anyone have a comment on whether a fast expanding round or a deep penetrating round would be better? Grizzlypeg raises a good point here I think.

sorry my fault I was thinking the m14 was .223 cal. Ya I think a .308 would be fine forsure.
 
Hunting bullets of 150 grs and up from a .308 would be suitable for pigs, with the proviso that the bullet will stabilize in your barrel and that the powder burn rate is suitable for use with the M-14's gas system. Pigs are compact and dense, so I would be inclined to go with a bullet that is designed for heavier game to ensure against failure, and a bullet suitable for bears would be my choice. A 180 gr Hornady or a lighter TSX would be almost perfect.
 
no less than ROSS SEIFREID did an article using an m1a and razorbacks during the early '90's - it was un g&a- took about 4 pages and covered hunting, bullet selection, and a bunch of other stuff, including a remedial action when the scope got whacked- and he was using the new gen 3 mount- basically, the only thing he really complained about was the gun being TOO LONG- and wanted to whack off about 4 inches -ie remove the flash hider- this was, in my opinion, somewhat short sighted( excuse the pun) as the 14 et al look "funny" when just the flashider is removed, instead of the proper way, which was shortening the barrel and re-installing the f/h as so many have done with the norinco
 
IIRC, many guys have killed them with far less powerful rounds. However, they may have been shootign to eliminate a pest with what was close at hand rather than a planned hunt
